There are some references to the AEC D197 and D203 ‘boxes. These were constant-mesh 5 and 6-sp ‘boxes developed from Thornycroft gearbox technology.
This Leyland Buffalo/Beaver (?) was owned by M. Van der Linden, and has got a Dutch reg. It appears to be RHD though..?
Normally, Brit exports to NL had LHD. Perhaps this one was engaged on short hops from Holland to the Channel ports and then delivering groupage throughout UK. Step-frame tilts were often associated with groupage. If so, it would make sense to import a RHD unit, which would in any case have been cheaper.
That’s the odd thing, as far as I understand it was never used on cross channel work. I’ll try to find out more about it.
Not Leylands but as an aside, Tspts Guisnel had one or two RHD drive French registered trucks for their UK furniture deliveries in the 90’s.
Perhaps the groupage was to mountainous Switzerland or Italy then!
Exactly my point. We, likewise, often used LHD units for Channel hopping as well as for long-haul.
