LHD Bedford TMs

When was the first production turbo Detroit 71 series made?

Carryfast:
I think Detroit already had plenty of experience of reliably turbocharging the 71 series well before the introduction of the 92.

The correct answer to the question would include a date. Off you go- try to find the facts to support your opinions, for once.

I’ve already done that once before.

Were there any lorry versions of the 71T engine, or was it just for tanks and boats? If so, when were the lorry versions introduced, and were enough sold before 1974 to give GM the confidence to launch the TM with them as an option?

Thinking of restoring a TM? Try this:

I tried to buy a TM once, it was the full width sleeper version with an E290. Bloke wanted twice as much as I wanted to pay so it never happened. It was RHD too so has no relevance to this thread, but that doesn’t appear to stop others from posting [emoji38]

I’ve just got back from the pub. The relationship of the rest of the vehicle to the bit I hold onto is unimportant to me.

Me too! This is what a chap wants! Robert

When I first started driving I used to take out a D1311 that was an ex road sweeper. It only had one steering wheel unfortunately and it did 45mph flat out, it would pull away in 3rd gear and it only had a 4spd box [emoji38]

Kinell. If I got into it and saw two steering wheels, I’d probably lock it up and walk home. No point being silly.

Kinell! Where’d you put your cooking gear and the bronzed Ausie hitch-hiker? Happy Easter break old mate! Robert

So, had any lorry versions of the 71T engine been produced at all, at the time the TM was launched?

Carryfast:
Firstly without detailed engine spec records of every US truck built between around 1965-74 who knows how many were actually used in road haulage applications…Blah blah…

Who knows indeed? Those who check the facts before running their mouths off may have some knowledge- people who check press cuttings etc, then report the findings to support any arguments that they might have. Do you have any evidence that GM had built any turbocharged lorries, prior to the launch of the TM?

.

You suggested that they should have used a turbocharged engine. Do have any evidence at all, that they even made a turbocharged commercial vehicle engine, prior to 1974?

Carryfast:
While arguably it might not even have been totally unknown for the previous 71 series to also have been in use in turbocharged form in certain cases where ‘it might’ have been considered by some as the better option over the non turbo 12v71 for example. But it will probably take some extremely involved, difficult, digging, most likely in the Australian market sector,to find it. :bulb:

So you do not know whether or not GM made a turbocharged lorry engine, at the time that you suggested that they should have put a turbocharged engine in their lorry?

.

Your’e back to saying they should have put an unproven engine in it, having previously switched to the argument that they had a proven engine to use, without having any evidence of that. What is it to be- stupidity or lies, or both?
