Lessons in reversing an artic

On the new ‘auto’ boxes you can’t left foot brake as the brake knocks the throttle out (to avoid burning out the clutch) the best way to stop it running away is to engage the engine brake, it works on a Stralis, I believe the manufacturers altered the software to allow it to work at low revs in reverse.
As for tips, the best one is to watch how the others do it, main thing you need to worry about is positioning, set yourself up so that you are at the shallowest angle possible & then go SLOWLY, make small movements of the steering wheel, it’s a lot easier to wind a bit more lock on than it is to swing from one lock to the next. Above all don’t worry when you make a balls up, we’ve all done it & there will always be a crowd of drivers watching when you do, on the other hand though, you’ll do a blind side reverse into the tightest spot possible, with rain on the windows & the sun shining in the mirrors & there won’t be a single person around for miles! happy trucking…

Soooo true. Whenever I have a bad day and really balls-up an easy reverse there’s always a good crowd watching. When it goes in one with no problems there’s nobody in sight.

Remember though, that although you feel like everyone is watching you, most probably haven’t even noticed you. Take your time, if you need to GOAL (get out and look) and don’t be afraid to ask someone to watch you back or help. (Just don’t ask a forkie   )
