Leaving the Forces

Take the dull boring job until this recession ends - might still get the odd day at the weekend driving :bulb:

gibsla, have a really good think about this. Anyone on this website will tell you how bad the industry has become over the past few years. It has seen the loss of a lot of hauliers and its not small fleets with a couple of wagons. Reids had what, 200 or so employees? Ramage wasnt a small operator either! This is going back to before the fuel prices rocketed. It is a very unstable industry and it wont get any better soon. Just make sure you can get work before you commit to any resettlement courses. I would use your licence as something to fall back on. Assuming you get a month termination leave, keep the extra cash to spend on your CPC later if things pick up but go for something with more potential for your resettlement

Doesn’t look rosey and to be honest, I don’t want you in my club :exclamation: :exclamation:

Are there any openings for a civvy where you work now

there may be an opening but the starting wage is £16000 a year for a 37 hour week. the hours arent too bad 0730-1600 mon - thurs and 0730-1230 friday no weekends but on call every 6 weeks but to be honbest i wouldnt want to work there as its a pretty pants job (i think it is anyway) and i dont really want to be working in accounts or dishing out clothing for the rest of my natural. i want to do something that i enjoy (at the minute) and get a few contacts in the industry for future plans…

Hi mate you prob no this web site but the are some driving jobs there have a look

Tesco’s have said they will give a two week placement before I leave the navy to see if I am right for them and they are right for me. I know its Tesco’s and everyone moans about them but it might be the foot in the door that I need.

At the risk of being branded a heretic don’t discount Tesco as a way into transport management if that is what you want. They, along with DHL, have fast track programs for those who aspire to that and may, if you fit their needs, give you a much wider career opportunity.

Didn’t Tesco have some plans to run booze on ships on the Manchester ship canal, and using rail to trunk, don’t they tie up with Stobarts? As an avenue into many types of logistics and transportation they could be a good bet, and in these difficult times I would think that Tesco would be very well placed to both survive and exploit the upturn. They may also sponsor you if CILT is seen to be worthwhile.

that was exactly my thoughts.

its not as if tesco are going to go bust over night and from what they have said already, they will train you to a high standard and there is scope for promotion.

i do need my CPC to get the foot in the door there though, so no pressure! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

I’ve spoken to several soldiers leaving the Army and they have all led me to believe the Army will put them through almost any course. If that’s true, have you considered training for a tower crane driver. The ones I have spoken to tell me they pick up around £1,000 per week. One in particular lived in Southampton via an agency. He got £280 per week expenses for digs in Oxford or train fare home + £24 an hour. There are other benefits, on the tower crane driving lark, builders have to “book” the use of the site tower crane several days in advance but get around this by “bunging” the driver/banks-man £25/£50/£100 a time cash money on the spot. It all goes straight in your pocket. The course taken privately will cost about £2,000+ ish.

If your wondering, if it’s so good why am I driving a truck, is 'cos I haven’t got a head for heights and would probably freeze halfway up the tower ladder.

If you intend to turn into a number crunching “suit”, Tesco will certainly do that for you.

crane driving is not for me sorry. i am ok looking out the bedroom window or on eh top of a load but if you are looking at few hundred feet…FORGET IT!

the money would be nice but it wouldnt be worth the amount of drugs i would have to take to get myself up there!

Same as that. I was very much up for it until I parked underneath one.

Maybe it’s possible that you can negotiate 19/22nds of a pension at discharge? It will invaluably help the days that come without a job …but don’t give-in without a proper-stroppy fight. They’re only civil servants at the JPAC, and a decent 1st/2nd/3rd RO combination will do many things to help a ship-wreck because it aint their brass, etc.

Meanwhile, I spent an ELC on CPC (Int) and stumbled on the Part 4 of the four module requirement (it’s a consistent b’stard of a Case Study - see the many topic threads on TNUK).

However, the ‘International’ module in comparison is cheap & gash-easy but an arguable distraction at the immediate stage though sounding ■■■■ to have. Who needs an arguably a frivellous distraction with the need to achieve the CPC Part 4 if Tesco remains a viable option for ya? (It’ll cost ya peanuts later-on compared to being jobless or having your Mrs cheesed-off because the hours will more likely upset her without you having Part 4)

Seeing as I enjoy decent hours with the agency, I dunno if I can muster the stimulation of eventually wrapping my last CPC Part 4 module any longer (ie, nailing the consistently b’stard & mega-pedantic Case Study) …having seen the grey faces of Transport Managers, OL holder , shift managers, clerks & their deputies, etc, but all our needs differ…

Failing that, would Doris walking make such a bad day…?

keith,

if i do get medically discharged i will get a pension anyway, roughly £8k a year tax free (plus i get a gratuity) but i will be kaking myself if i cant get a job. the one thing we have been told is not to factor the pension in with your wages as employers dont need to know about that as they will expect you to work for less.

i will manage but the CPC will be a starter for the foot in the door…

‘…the CPC will be a starter for the foot in the door…’

I’d hope so …it’s a lot more than many out here have.

Maybe chucking a wedge o’ gratuity at the mortgage with todays interest rate/APR could contribute to ‘hey presto’?

Best o’ British, matey (if that isn’t contrary to a European diktat, etc)
