this is what happens if you are stupid enough to drive about with your curtains done up and your straps undone.
I very nearly let the driver carry on and rip his wingtops off, but was in a good mood (early finish) so I went and told him, (about his wingtops, not that I was going home early!)

I don’t think the customer thinks anything of the sort, the only thing the customer thinks about is the figure at the bottom of the invoice.
Thing is, you can’t invoice anybody until you have got their attention & got them around the table to discuss a price in the first place. That’s where the clean & tidy looking units & trailers come into it. Not all customers look for the most dirt cheap price they can get & don’t most hauliers like other businesses compete for the big money gigs by selling a supposed quality of service & professionalism?
Generally, the biggest and most lucrative contracts out there aren’t being won by the companies running kit that looks tatty & uncared for.

Not in our case, we are own account and deliver/pick up our own goods for sale, hire or repair
That’s what I meant by we
As in, that what we do too. No surprise that we both work for own account operators, that both have gaffers who want their “fleets” such as they are, looking fly

true some dont but some customers do, i know a few companies who would rather pay a few quid more to have there goods delivered on a truck looking nice and tidy rather than have a tatty looking truck turn up at there customer to deliver there goods.
bull sheet! Would like to see you prove that one.
Ours, if one of our units so much as gets dented it’s Sent for repair asap.
I am running our old spare trailer while waiting for a new trailer and I know it’s doing the bosses head in having it on the road as it’s a bit tatty.
We can personalise our wagons but he will not have anything in the windows or over the top, so as to keep a proffesinal image. His words not mine.
How exactly does that prove that a company will pay more to have a haulage company pull their goods with smarter motors? you are just talking about your boss here.
We are not a haulage company, we sell, hire, repair and move forklift trucks and other manual handling equipment, so it pays to have a professional image in a competitive market.
It ain’t all black and white

my boss does work for two large multi national food firms and a family firm that does horse feed and bedding it’s stated that all trucks and trailers must be clean, curtains to be tear free (they do allow patches but not like a patchwork quilt) with all buckles tucked in, drivers too be clean and tidy and punctual as the driver is usually the first thing a customer see’s and they want too portray a good image in return they pay there hauliers above market rates to ensure this happens.

Its days like this that make me glad I don’t pull curtainsiders anymore.

My fault, but I took me eyes off a forkie in a yard for long enough for him to undo the curtains on the other side of mine on a windy day. He was only trying to help but I could gladly have throttled him… but at the end of the day, what can you do ?
