P&O companies

P&O was a tremendous outfit in its day: North Western Roadways, West Midland Roadways, Coastal Roadways, Eastern Roadways International, Henry Smithers, John Forman, James Hemphill, A S Jones, Northern Ireland Trailers/Pandoro, N.I. Trailers (Scotland), Storemasters, Butlers Warehousing, Ferrymasters… plus any I’ve forgotten, not to mention all the shipping, and the Arndale Centres and Bovis Homes!

…and there were quite a few more including Anglo Overseas, Containerflow and a computer software operation based at Station House in Altrincham along with most of its UK ops in the late 70’s - 80’s and does anyone remember a service they had / maybe aquired in the 70’s called Europa Express? (Sorry but I can’t get my head around this Dubai Ports thing)

Speaking of Ramage, I passed their depot to-day at Silverlink there must have been about 80 Motors parked there, Sorry no photos, Regards Larry.

Depends what you call a large fleet really? Around here there is B.J Waters at Darley Bridge, Lowes (Matlock Transport) at Darley Dale, Slinter Mining at Cromford, Lockwoods at Sawmills, Seafield. There have been all the quarry operators which Dave has mentioned already plus Toft Brother’s and Tomlinson at Darley Dale, Via Gellia Transport, Mammoth, George Siddall at Darley Bridge, W H Phillips at Wirksworth, Joseph Hoyle at Darley Dale plus many more with smaller fleets such as Harry Evans, John Dunn, Swains, Websters of Wirksworth, Barlow and Hodgkinson, Mountains of Wirksworth , Woods of Kniveton, AK Transport, Sellers and Kent, Turners. Literally dozens of one man bands as well of course given the nature of the Peak District!

Pete.

Ford & Slater? They were the Leyland ones anyway.

Another couple to add from Nottingham, Claude Wheater and A.E. Andrews and Son. The latter’s founder Bill Andrews was a good friend to my brother and I in the 70’s when we were setting up our small haulage business. As Bill’s son was not interested in taking over the business Bill brought in a chap called Dean whose son, Chris, eventually took over control of the company and changed the name to Clearways, already mentioned.

And in my days with H. Shaw Haulage running out of Stanton there was also Beardings, regulars in there. Non of these I have mentioned, and some of the others, could really be classed as big fleets though.

Oh, and Ilkeston Haulage, where I drove a Scammell Highwayman for some time. It was always said that the boss would not pay more than 23 and a half hours a day, as he didn’t believe a lorry driver would go without his lunch. :open_mouth:

They had a fleet of mainly Highwaymen and Mandators but also tried out a few of those bonneted Internationals from the States. Not a success, they had trouble stopping, the brakes apparently weren’t up to the job.

Thank you very much A.E. Andrews rings a belll

No idea why I said A.E. Andrews, Bill’s name was William, thus W.E. Andrew & Son. And yes, that was a correction of another senior moment, I think his name was Andrew, not Andrews. :unamused:

They specialised in bulky light loads, like Kelloggs (a night trunk to Trafford Park was a job for me when I first knew him, while waiting for a job at Midlands Storage) and Super Sur gas heaters, so they had several 33 ft stepframe vans with single axles and little wheels. These were pulled by Redline tractors. When Bro and I started up he subbed to us and also offered us a complete outfit for £500. £100 down and £100 a month for 4 months, no interest. We turned him down because we didn’t want to break down miles from home with a tractor to hire with a Scammell Coupling.

A real gentleman in all senses of the word(s), I do hope he had a long and happy retirement.

I forgot about Andrews I worked with a driver at Stirlands called Brian Ashton he used to work for Andrews
He was always reminiscing about the gas heater work doing multi drops around Scotland
Regarding Clearway I often see a bloke called Nick Lacy he was one of the gaffers there when Clearway went belly up he set up his own business called
Abbeyfield
Also Midland Storage my dad worked there in the 60s
Cheers Gary

I was a night trunk driver for Stirlands for a year or so in the early 70s I think. The name Brian Ashton rings a bell but I can’t picture him.

Regarding Midlands Storage I was there in 69 or 70, again for about a year or so. What was your Dad’s name Gary?

I didn’t know Clearway had packed up. One of my drivers when I was TM at Toray went there after they were all made redundant. When I was driving for Gauthiers here in France between 2000 and 2003 I pulled up alongside one of their drivers at Sainsbury’s in N. London somewhere. I always enjoyed the reaction when a ‘French’ driver started talking to them in ‘ayup me duck’ English. He said Paul was still with Clearways at that time.

Dominic’s were bought out by Clearway that’s how Clearway got in to Boots
I don’t know how I forgot Tomlinsons
again my dad worked there
They finished in the late 80s after they lost a load of cigarettes from Players and the aftermath caused them to close
That’s when we started to deliver a lot more cigarettes for Players
Stirlands had always done a lot of work for Players mostly
bringing in raw and rag leaf tobacco out Avonmouth docks plus cardboard and paper from St Anne’s Paper board mill
A few pictures of my dad when he was a Tomlinsons

I have blown up your pictures Gary but still can’t recognise your Dad, although the name seems familiar. Perhaps he was at Midlands Storage before I got there. Ask him if he remembers Jock Gallagher, the yard foreman, I bet he was there then. Mind you, if you do I’ll bet you’ll have to speak up a bit, after seeing him with that Commer Knocker. :open_mouth: They were painful to drive, even in an age when noise in the cab was the norm.

I remember the Tomlinson brothers, 2 little blokes as I recall. I knew many of those medium/small hauliers back in the 70s as I was on the RHA committee with them, David Sladen, Chris Wheater, ? Henson and the Tomlinsons. Another name has just come back to me, though I don’t remember the boss there - Chettles.

I joined Hedley Shaw in Stapleford just after he ended up in hospital because he set fire to himself in the garage, throwing paraffin onto the stove one cold morning to get it going. He survived but his firm was bought by (Charlie) C.E. Dormer from Leytonstone. They were big in gas bottle distribution and, after buying Coopers of Wednesbury, put Reg Cooper in charge of us. Not a bloke I enjoyed working for.

Jock was a good friend of my dad and our family
Here’s some photos of Midland Storage lorries

This is my dad about 2 years ago he’s in his 70s now

You might remember him also when he worked for Kinneils before joining Stirlands
