Without doubt, this was my favourite “old timer”
The owner did not speak English but he knew what I was doing and seemed very proud that I wanted to take pics of his…well… “WRECK”!
Spotted it running round the capital Argostoli many times. Actually heard it coming way before I saw it. A tadge noisy
The Fassi 90 ton per metre crane looked immense as it reached out to the boats to lift off aggregate and stone. Sorry, not allowed into port for those pics
It’s badged as a CH 230. It’s Swiss “spec” but I didn’t know Volvo made a 230 Swiss special■■? Anyone know more?
I wonder if the badge really belongs, Ash? As I recall, the CH230 was essentially an F12 fitted with a narrow-winged F7 cab, built at Irvine especially for the Swiss market and with an overall width of 2.3m.

Look at the cab on that green one though, it is narrower, if you look at the front wheelarches where the rubber steps were, they are missing, the arches are much narrower.
This is one of Leo Bols restorations.
This is the CH230 with the narrow F7 cab mounted on an F12

Well spotted!! An earlier incarnation of the CH230, then? Before my time, of course

The old khaki wreck is probably a US Army Jimmy…
Thanks for that Harry. Couldn’t get close enough for a proper look. I wondered if it was very early Volvo or Vabis?
Your old timer is a 3-ton Dodge. The cab style was introduced in 1939 and ran until 1947 as the V- and W-series with minor facelifts to the grilles and lights, and the cabin pressings were used well into the 1950’s as the basis of the Power Wagon 4x4. They were built in America and Canada and sold on the civilian market as Dodge, Plymouth (lighter weights only), DeSoto or Fargo in various markets. Many of the 3-tonners were supplied to the British in WW2, including hundreds which were ordered by the French but diverted to England after the fall of France. This one almost certainly ex- British Army.
Hi Ash,
Ahh 40c is that all, it’s been 42c here now and it’s September. You know it’s hot when there is a fan on outside!
but you would know that by the nice weather you’re having Paul
Great pictures, thanks for posting! We were out there in May this year, so brought back some memories! We saw a lot of the motors you managed to snap. I was a bit miffed i didn’t get to photograph the 8-legger Daf with the raised cab (although the cab wasn’t raised in May! ). Also saw the black FH GTXL with it’s grille missing, but was busy driving our miniscule Daihatsu at the time! (The FH incidentally did have it’s grille missing in May!)
Anyway, here’s a few i did get…

SNAP! Saw the Silver MAN Roadhaus/tipper regularly and I love the yellow “disabled” car (on page 2 here). I saw that in Argostoli town. Very neat how the back opened and the guy just wheeled himself straight out. Going back in, he simply locked the wheel chair in position and drove off! Cool ay He wouldnt get away with that here (H&S).

The trailer had a steering front axle, which i don’t think i’ve seen before. Got it on another video as it pulled out of Lixouri port in action, will try and post that when i get a chance.
Lol, missed that invalid wagon in action unfortunately!
I love the Greek Islands, and if my retirement plans come together I could see myself retiring out there with my little Greek house paid for and some sort of a pension.
I dont know what those drivers earn, not alot I would imagine, but what a great way to supplement a UK pension. Driving around in the sunshine of a Greek island in an old F10/12 or 142 / 143. No stress, beautiful scenery, a relaxed attitude to life and an old school, 1980`s truck as well!

You must be a brave man, taking pics around a Greek airport and of the aircraft parked up!!
Remember those plane spotters a few years ago??
Brave is one word for it I think they may have chilled a little since then, certainly at Kefalonia, I spent an afternoon at the airport, it’s great for those ‘undercarriage brushing your hair as they come over’ experiences! Barely saw a soul all day, let alone anyone official. Probably not too wise whilst walking across the apron though! …i guess that’s why the nice man asked me politely to stop

The Daf Space Cab shown in 240 Gardner’s pics getting off the ferry with a container looks very much like the only left ■■■■■■ that was on Rokold’s fleet back in the early 90’s, it was originaly on a C reg.
