Job offer- delivering cars on trade plates. DIARY

ROG:
Is my maths correct as I make that 25 hours for £102  :exclamation: before any deductions :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Im only paid when im driving a vehicle, and even then its worked out by the shortest route from A to B. When im not driving (i.e getting a lift somewhere) im not classed as at work and so dont get paid. Thats what happens when youre self employed!

The rate works out to approx £10 an hour that way.

Lankytim:
The rate works out to approx £10 an hour that way.

Would it be fair to say that half your actual day will be travelling to get a vehicle and that figure is then in reality about £5 per hour

Not even that Rog. Its possible to spend 12 hours at work and earn a tenner!

THIS IS THE CREDIT CRUNCH :frowning:

But yes, half the day is travelling to get a car. On Monday however im driving from Stoke to Newcastle to deliver a car and bringing back a trade in from the same guy, a “key for key” These are the best jobs. Minimum faff, maximum money.

Had a goodish day on Monday and Tuesday, relatively speaking. Mega hours though so again, as an hourly rate its atrocious. Today was another 10 hours for £20. Tomorrow looks like it could be the same.

Im starting to worry now. Cack all on the agency and this job wont pay the bills. Ive got a pregnant wife and mortgage to look after, the missus is still working ATM and her wage is paying the mortgage but soon she will soon have to pack up for her maternity leave. Then it could get interesting.

My life is starting to go ■■■■ up, frigging credit crunch.

Im honestly considering joining the RAF for a few years.

looks like your in stoke and so is bug and he seems ok on his agency, give him a pm.

It seems as though you are being had over a barrel by your “mate”. 10 hours work for 20 quid :smiling_imp: There was a thread on here by El Gordo about plating, the dealerships will pay a couple of hundred quid for a dealer transfer, even Uniloads pay something like 60 quid a day

Lankytim, you have a PM

Lankytim:
After my not so good news today ive followed up an offer of work and have an interview tomorrow. Its working on a self employed basis delivering cars over the U.K on trade plates. I know the basics of what is required but have no actual experience. Does anyone here have any knowledge or opinions on this type of work theyd like to share?

Even if it turns out to be a dreadful job its still work, and work pays the bills!

I would give it a couple of weeks before you make up you’re mind wether or not it pays the bills. I’ve come across a few trade platers, and most of them have said that it takes a lot of hussling to really make it pay, that and a good action to the old right arm (as in thumbing a lift, you dirty minded person you)

this is what i am doing at the moment,i deliver new vehicles all over the country and its not too bad i only get paid for the delivery but if there is a return i get a % of that also,i dont use trade plates because i just catch either buses or trains to get back home which is the downside because relying on public transport can be a bit of a pain sometimes,i deliver mainly new cars but i do get vans and sometimes minibuses, the company is based in leeds but have got a contract with a major dealer in derby and we are quite busy so thats not bad, most of them are lease vehicles for companies like comet, asda, balfour beatty etc and they got a big network rail contract starting soon which hopefully will keep me busy over the next 3 months, all in all its not that bad and more importantly it does help with the bills…

I sold a 3.5 ton covered car transporter trailer to a guy from the Stoke on Trent area who got layed off of car transporters after 20 years or so. He start his own business delivering cars on plates and then on trailers and said he was going fine. Told me he employed 26 casual drivers, and was able to charge £1 per mile one way only. Due to his knowledge and contacts was able to load both ways. I have been thinking about this reasontly and wander if anyone had seen the website shiply and what their thoughts were on earning money with a 2 car transporter :ie 3.5 ton flatbed and 3.5 ton trailer. I understand from this guy he needed a tacho but no “o” licence , is this correct?

uship.com is a similar website. They charge for every successful bid. They have quite a lot of national and international vehicle transport requirements on both websites.

I stand corrected if I’m wrong, but believe that tachos are required if the train weight of the vehicle is more than 3.5t. As you are suggesting a 3.5+3.5 train weight then I would assume a tacho is required.

i gave a lift to a ‘plater’ last month from Cheiveley (usual haunt for me :open_mouth:  ) who was wanting to get to Heyford Park for a car to take home for am delivery…no prob, i’ll nip up the B430, drop him near the gate. Got chatting and he said that he had been on the road since 5am…i knew that it was nearly 11pm when i dropped him off and he had to get to Notts (iirc) to get home after collectng the car and i said 'i’d want £300 a day for that…he replied he was lucky if he got that a week…needs must, i suppose. Something saying yr on here might help loads concerning lifts or perhaps a daily update of ‘who goes where’ kinda thing. U might end up earning a grand a week :sunglasses:

I did one day at that job a long time ago, had to pick up a Merc Demo Unit from a firm in London, and return it to Manchester. Ranks amongst the worst working days of my life. Cant remember the rate for the job now, but I didnt get paid for going down , and got paid just a bit more than nowt for driving the motor back. With a wadge of cash dumped in my hand to put in the Tank of the Unit. (dont forget the receipt) at 10 am in the morning I am still in the office of the guy running the company in M/cr waiting for my “lift” part way from a driver who has picked a motor up in Leeds and is dropping it down south, when he gets a call from the customer asking for my ETA, he gives them some unrealistic time saying I`m well on my way. My lift arrives and off we go down the M6, onto the M25 were I am dropped off at a junction. (bear in mind I have to be their before the firm closes) I walk to a rail station. Then find the ticket machine is bust. Train comes in everyone gets on train without a ticket. I walk straight into a ticket collector. (Now this is getting daft)
The Train sails straight through the station in the smoke I am supposed to get off with me looking through the window as the platform flashes by I get off at the next station and phone the customer who ■■■■■■■■ me for being late. I says DONT CLOSE I AM NOT FAR AWAY !!! So I commence to run/walk very fast to the company yard to collect the Unit. Arriving about 6pm,I get my ear bent by the guy, and I tell him “When you rang about an ETA, and he said I was well under way I was sat next to him” no answer to that. Soooo then drive I back through the London Rush hour arriving back in M/cr at nearly midnight to be picked up by the company owner. Who says “Right…Ready for another one tomorrow” You can guess what I said…AND I never got paid for the job. I would never go near that work again EVER ! :open_mouth:

Mention of Pro-driver, Leicester in an earlier post reminded me of this I saw a couple of months ago:

I dont get this "credit crunch" argument, Ive just had a week off, and I was pestered non stop being offered work for last week and next week.

I am actually starting back @ 05.00 tomorrow, instead of Monday, as its that busy :open_mouth:

And, its only 41 days to Xmas eve from tomorrow, if you ain`t busy now, you will never be busy :open_mouth:

And, did`nt I read that DRIVER HIRE are 30% up last month, year on year ■■?
