Is it worth the hassle for you.?You will need your digi card ,photo licence and DCPC. As you say a job in a library or in other places pays just as well.
I have the photo licence and the digi card.
I’m wondering if I should get an ADR simply because it may open other doors for me and will count towards the DCPC nonsense.
I does strike me as odd that a librarian (say) can be fired for making a big mistake but a driver can go to jail.
That is not recognised by the industry at all it seems to me.

He he. I remember jumping out of an old Mandator (I think) with a buttoned up donkey jacket and hanging meself on the handbrake… well embarrasing.
Oooh the good old days…when you had to light a fire under the sump to get the oil liquid, and set fire to a newpaper in front of the air intake to help heat the air to encourage the old girls into life…whilst wearing the donkey jacket to keep warm.
Thank Christ the world has moved on ! But I have keep my donkey as it still performs the necessary job of keeping me warm in winter.
Chris-J:
As I am checking into things I’m getting more and more down about the whole thing.
Aside from the lack of responses to the CV’s I have sent out the wages are rubbish from what I can see.
I can probably earn the same money working in the library.
The world seems also full of agents who post interesting looking jobs.
All you get is a “come on in and register”
When you check there is no actual job anyway.

You’ve got the picture now Chris…
I sure do.
Funny thing is, I did find something last night…
Driving a recovery truck & delivering trucks back to clients after sales & service.
Not exactly long distance work but is worth a look.

Just an update I checked out the above job that was advertised at 30hrs pw.
Turns out it was one day pw and maybe more, get yourself back to base and the chap would tell me the wage over the phone.
I have politely declined.
Man who is to blame for how people treat drivers. !!
People who advertise jobs these days like that don’t reckon on getting sensible geezers like us (I’m old too) applying for them and then questioning our motives when we refuse. I think they work on getting a kid with fresh ticket who will be grateful for anything.

Agreed.
The state of this “Industry” is appalling tbh.
I wanted to get back in as part of a dream and recapturing something I have lost from my youth.
The closer I look the less appealing it is becoming.
The more folks that walk away from these kind of “offers” the better it will be for everyone in the long run.
Hi, I am 57 years young and like you done most of what you’ve done and im looking to get back on the road. Good luck to you and I don’t suppose if we do get a start we wont have an Eaton spliter or a Fuller Ha Ha.
i am the same as the op i have come back into the game after a few years away.
my findings when i first came back were these
how do i use a tacho card ?
were is the gear stick ?
what are all these buttons on the dash ?
my seat will not inflate up and i am banging my chin on the window trying to strech my neck to reverse
when reversing the unit stops and will not tick over nicely so i am jumping about like a new comer much to the amusement of others ?
when doing a spin the unit stops again half way through and i look like a right prat sat there trying to get the thing to move ?
they told me to monitor my kms when i travel empty and to use the computer in the cab to reset mileage ■■? yeah ok i just nod and then do a manual mileage so no one knows i dont have a clue how the computers work.
dont forget to use auto braking combined with the cruise control it saves fuel ■■? erm erm ok
then you come to dealing with transport clerks who dont understand a thing
ask for directions and you get a postcode for your sat nav ■■? so i will follow the sat nav shall i ■■? not a dam chance will i end up in a narrow lane or low bridge even the drivers dont know how to give you directions well the new ones the old school give me what i need m6 jun blah follow A blah etc
god how times have changed and how much i have to catch up and to think 15 years ago i was earning about 650 a week i shall look forward to the big increase after all the years ■■? yeah right
who on earth wants to come into this game anymore ? sadly its lost all the happy laid back times i used to enjoy even the drivers are reporting on each other if one dare have a sly smoke in the cab ( not that i ever would smoke in the cab as i know its against the rules
welcome to hgv driving in the 2000s
shove it up your lol is how i feel
Another "oldie " here.I agree with quite a bit of what you say desypete
Lots of jumping through hoops these days, inductions, assessments, debriefs and transport clerks who interrogate you because you had the audacity to be 2 minutes late getting out of the yard at the beginning of your shift.
