Job done and driver shortage

coming back uk 2wks time if it was over water same here but geuss hourly pay would be day rate not a lot wrong with a magnum is that the guy that run morocco

When a job pays below par in terms of hourly rate - you really want it to be a part- time job.

If that rate had been for 25 hours a week (2x12.5hr shifts) AND it was “across the road” from where I live, then I, too, would still find some interest to show it.

Bugger doing 48+ hour weeks for anything less than £15ph now though… I’m not in any hurry to return to full time, so I don’t need to hold my breath. :sunglasses:

15 p.h. ye gr8 if u find one over the water paying that let me know

You can get that working (class 1) at Royal Mail after 12 weeks of being there full time… With national pay scales, it’s probably the best job to be had in places up north as well. I understand that girls dating young men are “impressed as if the guy was a stockbroker” when they say they have a job “driving a truck for Royal Mail” - Pity the post doesn’t have that kind of appeal down south here though… :frowning:

well ye if u wanna work for the mail

I wish you well in your retirement and hope you have made the right choice. I must agree that the job has changed a great deal, and i also feel a bit sorry for the newbies who cannot get a start because of a lack of experience. I get slated sometimes on here because i quote my many years in the business, so its not always to everyones taste, and i applaud those who know that experience matters and praises it.
What i cannot get my head around is ( and even the poster said so ) the fact that many feel something is going to happen in September !
We all know that the DCPC in its present form does nothing for the industry, and has not increased road safety and is a complete waste of time and money, in fact most of us drive the same we have always done, and that is with consideration for other road users. However, i would say that there are a great many who have done the DCPC in preparation either paid for by their companies or out of their own pocket, and the majority have done it because they either dont want, or cannot afford to be out of work. There is only a handful of drivers who have said they will not do it, and i will bet theres a few of those who have changed their minds, i dont blame them for whatever way they choose to go, making a stand against the ridiculous legislations enforced upon us. But the only thing thats going to happen in September is there will be more VOSA on hand to make sure we have complied, no pay rises, no change in conditions, it will be the same as it was in August, and will be the same in October, sorry but thats the truth.

Last Monday I had had enough, ever increasing hours and decreasing money.planners who have never sat in a truck let alone drive one. At 64 that’s it. Monday was the last day of my working week. In went my notice along with a sick note for two weeks to cover the notice period.
After 40 years in the job I would consider myself reasonably experienced. Having done all the Uk. Europe, and running to Syria,Turkey, and Iran,in the1970s. That allowed me to pay the mortgage off in 1979 leaving enough to buy a second house for cash.
Any way I went in to the yard the following day to take all my gear back. The big Boss called me into the office for a leaving debrief. I told him ever increasing hours and decreasing wages. The trouble is these. Bosses haven’t twigged on there is a crisis coming over the horizon. His attitude is one of. I have 20 applications on my desk for blokes who want jobs.i put my cv out to a few agencies I may do the odd day to cover holiday spends ,but on my terms.the phone has never stopped ringing. If any body wants confirmation that there is a shortage coming. I would suggest that they look at the report done by Dr Ross Maloney director of intelligence strategy for Skills for Logistic. If you don’t want to read the report. Just go to section5 and read the conclusions .If any driver puts up with the dodo after Sept. They have only themselves to blame.

Sashmash leave it for the “young uns” enjoy your retirement.
I retired 3 years ago after spending my working life "on the road"in one way or another,I said at the time if I dont have the need to use my Licence in the next 12 months then its not being renewed, and it wasnt.
Spend my time now doing exactly what I want when I want, the same as getting up.
Its great looking out the window seeing what the weathers like and getting back in bed if its crap,or if its good either go fishing or potter about or go for a walk.
The only "boss"I have now is “her indoors”

To hell with the DCPC, to hell with the EU, to hell with weak UK governments, and to hell with the transport industry. I’m another old schooler with over 20 years under my belt. To those who argue that drivers simply accept the DCPC, do the training and keep quiet, I say, …what’s next ? Until all parties show a little common sense (which seems to be in short supply nowadays) the transport industry will continue to spiral chaotically up it’s own jacksie !

Look at the first three pages on this forum and you’ll find plenty of posts asking about hours, loading etc etc, and plenty of “advice” given in replies which is wrong. And these include ones from people who have 20+ years under their belt. If there was no need for training like the DCPC then these questions and incorrect answers would not exist. However they do and quite adequately demonstrate the need for a DCPC, albeit one better implemented than what we have.
