I know my finishing times roughly, don’t see why knowing the exact minute makes a difference.
Don’t mind starting at daft o’clock, better half the time since the scum are mostly still asleep.
I don’t get monitored much, I’m trusted to do my job and left to it.
I do long hours and make a very good wage. Long hours are part and parcel of the job, up to you what you get paid for it.
I treat these people with the same attitude.
Ditto.
Going above and beyond what you’re required to do isn’t exclusive to driving.
I love overnighting, every day an adventure and all that.
Slept in some great laybys, some of the views you get are quite spectacular.
I don’t have a set finishing time, so I can’t not finish then.
Sounds like you work for a bottom feeding company.
The job is what you make it, if your a mug you will be treated like one, you have no one else to blame except your self if your employer treats you like one.
As for respect, they have to earn it, if your not shown it, don’t give it, they will soon change their ways, I can count on 1 hand the issues I have had with management and goods in staff over a 30 year period.
Started at daft o’clock (2.30am) this morning from Madrid, maxed driving hours yesterday and 9hrs off last night, only to suit myself though, done and dusted later today…

Start times you get used to. Yeah not knowing when your going to finish if your doing days or it’s a Friday and you want to go home can be a pain, but you’ll have something about any job that could be better.
I don’t feel monitored every minute, and as long as I’m doing what I’m being asked to do and being paid to do it doesn’t bother me.
There’s plenty of jobs where you don’t get treated with any respect. Police officers spring to mind.
I never park overnight in lay-bys. Either snap sites, transport depots, or nice quiet and clean industrial estates.
My last job was 40 hours per week and I knew all my start and finish times. It was salaried but if I worked out equivalent hourly rate it was a fair bit more than my hourly rate now. But the job was so stressful I parked it in for this. Where you get higher rates of pay you tend to get more responsibility and therefore stress thrown in. Yeah it’s long hours now but other than that it’s a fairly easy life.

If you don’t like the job, stop moaning about it, and get another one that you do like, and by the way don’t let the office door knock you over on the way out.
40k a year sounds great …BUT your not actually saying what you have to do to get that figure,it could be your putting more hours in working your socks off and think thats a normal job.
OR it could be you are not what could be called a general Driver, and work for private individual Company who pays its Drivers a basic wage in line or on par with its factory workers, and you get 40k because due to the nature of the job do more hours than them.
I know that happens as I got paid the rate for engineering, which was higher at the time than ordinary driving jobs got paid

My CV is top but I live in the real world I have never earned less than 40000 a year and I still resent the hours and treatment
Not being funny but with your level of spelling your CV would be in the bin mate.
Well that’s the difference you think you can spot spelling mistakes and thats what you’re good at, go for it does that make you a contribution to this post I don’t think so
I would say your in the category of 7.50 a hour and doing all hours god sent for that
It’s OK the job needs people like that so the likes of people like me is in demand
Hell of an assumption based off me picking you up on your atrocious spelling?
I’m not a grammar ■■■■ and if you go through my post history you’ll see I don’t usually pick out peoples spelling mistakes but yours falls into a whole new category of illiteracy, and I stand by my comment, if a perspective employer saw that standard of writing on a CV he’d bin it.
I live in possibly one of the worst areas in the UK for low wages but I still wouldn’t settle for £7.50 an hr and max hours, so trot on eh.

I always know it’s within 13 hours of when I start, so I try and find a decent park within 12.5…so not fussed really.
Never start before 6, I leave the early starts to the keen, eager to please and heroic, of which I am none of.
Refuse to be.
Cut my hours back recently, so I never max out now through choice.
I always make a point of disapproval if I am.
I treat people with respect and expect to be treated the same…as we all should.
See above.
Never really do tbh.
Don’t mind nights out, part of job, but yeh, would like more for it.
Never do,… I refuse to on principle.
I always finish within 12. 75, or if it suits me 14 .75.
I don’t consider myself a mug, but yeh, there are many mugs in this game, but only because they allow themselves to be treated that way, and lack balls and backbone.

Surely you are in the wrong job? Why not do something else, none of us are forcing you to do it…
Were you not told the wages before you took the job??

A.
Well said that man, bang on the money
Sounds like the OP is exactly the same as the rest of the older generation drivers I have met, old, bitter, used to being paid more than most of the new drivers are even offered, moans everyday about how “hard” he is being worked, complains whenever he is asked to to anything above his normal day.
Then has the audacity to complain when he sees new drivers working for less and doing more than him, even though he’s paid more and does less.
Here’s my opinion… you don’t like it? Sod off and find a new career that pays you so well for moaning so much, I’ll happily take your wage to help fund my child’s education.
Good thread this. So far we have two contestants who would drive a 44 tonne lorry for minimum wage. I personally for minimum wage would rather do next to [zb] all for it rather than help sabotage other drivers.
Any more heroes? Don’t be afraid, tell us all who you are…
I’m not working for minimum wage. But if my family need money I’ll happily jump in a truck for sod all. You lot get right under my skin, it ain’t anyone else’s fault that your wages are what they are. Everyone knows this game has good pay and bad pay, it’s entirely down to what you are prepared to do and where you are prepared to work,
It has naff all to do with a newbie driver working for £7.50ph because he either doesn’t know any different or hasn’t got the experience to get work at the better paying firms.
Stop blaming everyone else for your lack of resourcefulness. Want more money? Go bloody find it. Don’t want to be paid? Go sign on down the office and give another honest John your truck.
I’ll admit I was being a bit harsh and very broad when I said older generation drivers. I have actually met quite a few who don’t share their opinions.

After 35+ years in the game I think I could relate to everyone of those at some stage or other, You have to take the good the bad & the ugly at some time or other.
There were times that made you despair, there were times that made you so angry you wanted to punch some sense into someone but Overall I’ve enjoyed my years behind the wheel in general haulage, there was always a variety of interesting jobs & places to see.
