So where does the clown I worked for last week stand when he kept phoning to tell me to “get yer foot down” because of his zb poor planning? Especially seeing he knew full well I’d only just passed my class 1?
I cheerfully said yes, then completely ignored him and went at my own pace.
AND WHY DO THESE PEOPLE (WHO THINK THEY CAN BUILD THE FORTH BRIDGE ON THEIR DAY OFF) THINK I’M INTERESTED IN THEIR D.I.Y PLANS??
i used to drive a 3cx for a one man band ,and weekends he would get hire for self builders for me ,the things that they wanted done in a day ,you would have struggled with a 40 tonner one bloke left his missus as banksman , while i dug the footings for their new house ,she had a strange look on her face when i asked her to mark them out ,oh my husband said you would know what to do
Before I was old enough to go on the road I drove a CAT 970 in the pit supposedly loading lorries. Come Friday afternoons Saturday mornings and anytime near a Bank Holiday the cast of the Muppet Show would want shingle or some ballast etc.One day a BMW driver came in with a trailer built with pram wheels! Asked for 2 ton and he got it without question… I think it’s still at the bottom of the silt pond, thats where I put it at closing time and to my knowledge he never came back to repair it…

There’s a well known tale round here of a certain muck hauling company from the Wiltshire area who sacked a driver because he refused to drive flatout on the single c/way A420. He got his solicitor involved who advised him to report the incident to the Traffic Commisioner. Needless to say he got some cash out of court…
that’s why bulk tipper drivers are all excluded from obeying the highway code and taco laws vosa/cops turn a blind eye! Tippers motto “drive it like ya stole it” lol
All pay schemes will favour the employer rather than the employee. If you’re on hours It’s 8 and the gate. Paid bonus and they give you what they want, not what you’ve earned. I used to work for a firm on flat rate, plus nights out and percentage of revenue bonus. I wasn’t allowed to see an invoice incase I ran of and bought 50 motors and undercut them to nick the work. I only had their word of what I earned. Where I am now, everyone gets 500 a week in the bank whether you do 10hrs or 15hrs a day, up the road or local and at home. The work is shared evenly. We all do the same hrs (roughly), all do 2 to 3 nights out, and I think its the best method of payment I’ve ever come across
that sounds very fair where are you and can i have a job please

You certainly don’t see many doing 40 anymore! None of our drivers like the bonus scheme, so why rush about when surely the sensible thing would be for everyone to stick to the limit?
It’s right isn’t it that a TM can be done for failing to stop drivers speeding? Our company has sat tracking and our speeds are on display for all to see.

I work for colton commercials in barking. Dog the hunter is on with me too. We’re looking for a couple of drivers at the mo as we’ve just bought 11 extra units. The work is flat out at the mo. You get your good days and your bad days, like anywhere else. But I find it ok
bonus pay schemes may be legal but are mainly for the young and daft. Avoid like the plague. I worked tippers when i was young and daft always thrashed it chasing the next load, always stressed at the slightest hold up, now i just take easy driving slow as possible 39mph on s/c hold everyone else up secure in the knowlege that slower iam the more pay i get…
Unfortunately as drivers we are just tools to do a job. We get ordered to do the unreasonable by a stroppy divorced ex 7.5t driver / manager who did a crash course in how to be a ■■■■■■■■ to people more qualified then himself and when it can’t all be done because there are other vehicles on the road that make a thing called traffic they simply get someone else in who is foriegn, speaks little or no English, accepts £6ph and cannot drive like an adult and knows nothing but selfishness, ignorance and salted ham rolls.
The transport industry is renowned for the highest movement and turnover of staff with drivers moving around all the time jumping from job to job to find the cushtiest work i.e. little work as poss and £600pw. If there was not so many illicit hauliers and slave driver companys being allowed to operate and people were offered Careers not just Jobs then stability and human rights follows suit. I myself have little experience compared to all you older boys but I can say that I refuse the 40k a year to be a work horse / slave that comes with no contract saying I work there, no uniform, no pension, muddy office floor, and payroll office that hit and miss when they like etc etc. But take the 32k a year being an Employee of a reputable well established multi national company. Where you have an office, departments that you can talk to, a happy workplace where you do your job and go home at the same time and dont go bursting blood vessles at truck stops and wingeing about how lifes ■■■■ and how they can “poke their job ya kno wat i mean mate”.
My view is work is what you make of it. Why get a job somewhere if your not happy? Why drag your feet? I spent months writing letters to all the major players like Royal Mail, DHL , FedEx, BP, Total, Tescos, Sainsbury’s, Eddie Stobart’s, Morrisons, TNT etc asking them if they wanted to offer me a career and in return they get commitment and loyalty. If you work for ■■■■ you get ■■■■. Dont brass yourself off to 2 bob hauliers. If you want respect and security go see a Company that’s not got a Transport Manager in trainers and a T-Shirt smoking in his office ■■■■■■■ to his mums ■■■■■. Dispite the current debabate of there being no jobs out there I disagree, If you have got the internet and know how to work it, know how to speak to people then sky’s the limit.
unfortunately while you have vosa only pulling none uk trucks the cowboys in the uk will carry on shafting the drivers they have and any that might work for them, i talk to alot of uk drivers and all say the same thing when asked if they get much hassle from mr vosa, ( i have not been pulled in maybe a yr maybe 18months ) i drive a irish truck and have been pulled 35 times since jan this yr and not once did they find any infrindments or defects,
It is not legal ,laws were past to stop this years ago but like the silly wtd, they bring in silly rules so they look like they are making things better and safer ,but for the trucks this job is no better than when I started 37 yeaRS AGO

Dont know if this is legal or not. A place i used to work for paid us £400 flat rate everyweek, but we then got 20% of everything the lorry made over £1500. Surely this still encouages you to speed and bend the rules to make more money
I know this is a bit of a thread resurrection, but it’s better than starting a new (similar one);
Just had my pay review; Flatrate up from £8.14 ph to £8.30. Here’s the surprising bit given the fact we’ve all done NVQs and SAFED training; Our bonus scheme has increased on the base rate from £8 to £9 p/standard load and the higher (and pretty much hard to achieve unless you’re backloading allday or working a saturday morning is upto £13.75.
It won’t affect how I drive as I’ll just plod along as normal (got a 40mph notice on my lorry) and hope my wages increase, but surely all the SAFED/NVQ stuff will be proved a waste of time given the number of “typical” tipper drivers employed
Personally i wont work anywhere theres a bonus paid (exception would be a fuel bonus ) i prefer to get paid a decent rate for the hours i do nice and simple

That’s what most of us want, but we get told the bonus scheme is legal aslong as you stick to the relevant laws ie speed and hours. What goes in my favour is I can do about 3 hours on a Saturday, with the higher bonus rate and the fact I can cycle, it’s a good earner. They’re a good firm to work for on the whole, the company never quibble a repair though and will pull a lorry off the road even during a busy period.

Dont take this the wrong way but its funny that we think a companys good because they do the right thing with repairs when it should be the normal and we shouldent accept anything less

True, but the amount of wagons (some even sub for us) with defects that’ve clearly gone unrectified for weeks (lights, numberplates etc) makes you wonder whether my employer’s in the minority in this game…

We shold in fact be glad to have VOSA as without them there would be plenty of unroadworthy trucks out there lets face it theres a few cowboys in this game
