The-Snowman:
Well anytime anyone on this forum tries to talk up the job they get subjected to plenty of other members getting indignant and apoplectic and giving it the usual speel of “our jobs not that important” or “The country will survive perfectly well without us” or “a trained monkey can do it” or "its an unskilled job, nowhere near as important as an electrictian or plumber". With people like that in the job,why would anyone offer decent wages?
And when you answer back that you need to spend £2.5K to get the license, you get hit with “anyone can get a license.its not hard” or their favourite go to quote “it hardly makes the job skilled, its not exactly a qualification”.
So with THAT attitude in the industry by its drivers, why does anything think we are worth more than minimum wage?
hmm lets compare… driving, anyone can get the licence/qualification in a week, 2 max if you’re doing class 1 and 2.
plumbers and electricians on the other hand go to college and work through apprenticeships for upto 5 years!
i think I know which one should be paid more…
Well thanks for completely proving the whole point of my post
Its people like you im talking about.
rob22888:
Hey… max out your hours, do 5 nights out & start at 4am everyday and you’ll take home a bit over £500 though!!!
See, it’s not all bad.
Surprised it’s not being advertised as ‘up to £700 a week’ to draw all the mugs in. Although it seems such tactics aren’t necessary.
Those advertisements are just to bait the foreign drivers. I know there’s gonna be the whole “foreigners stealing our jobs” thing but should anyone work for money that bad?

Yep,its inevitable that debate will start at some point. Probably when Carryfast logs on
Also we have desypetes usual DCPC rant to look forward to as well

I saw a job advertised recently as £33,600-£36,000 per year on a 4 on 4 off rota. Sounds too good to be true I thought, but nothing ventured nothing gained.
When I rang them up I quickly steered the conversation on to money. He said it was £120 a shift in the week, £135 on a Saturday and £145 on a Sunday.
It doesn’t take a genius to work out that doesn’t get you anywhere near £36,000 per year. The call didn’t last long after that.
Can’t remember the exact figures but it worked out at just over £22k per year. Imagine the overtime you’d have to bang in to get up to £36k. No thanks.
Don’t encourage Carryfast, or it will turn in to a 12 pager, he will blame the Red Baron, braking systems on A frame trailers, Sooty and Sweep, Bungle, Zippy and the Clangers.
I earn more than that driving a rigid! Prior to starting my current job I was also offered a job driving artics and they would put me through my c+e but only wanted to pay £7.65 an hour, unsurprisingly I was that desperate to be driving artics.
Have also noticed when looking for jobs previously that firms with shine new trucks generally pay less.
bristolron:
That works out roughly as £7.03/hr for 40 hours and 5 hours guarenteed overtime @ £9.45/hr.
I think I will pass on that one. Blokes at our place driving sprinter vans earn more than that!!!
How about emailing them these figures now you’ve broken it down…■■?
Just to let them know they’ve been ‘rumbled’ by some people…■■
I had a cup of tea and a natter with a good lad from the north east yesterday,he was telling me the rates of pay on offer in the north east, ive heard on here they are bad but he was telling me what was on offer and i was shocked,if i lived in up that way and tramped i would look for work further down the a1,propper crap money, the money they call good is the norm anywhere else, whys that then he mentioned ramage being the worst and bulkhaul [i think]being good, all the rest were about the same crapness,in fairness he had a nice motor and said the job was good but that dont pay the bills
The whole country in any trades wages have stayed the same for the past 15-20 years.
Everyone is in the same boat struggling with wages and costs of living.
I’m quite happy with what I get paid for the work I do.
Let’s be honest the average wages are
Tramping £500-600 in bank
Day £300 400 in bank
Nights. £350-450 in bank
Everybody is paid roughly the . Same except the chosen few that are specialist jobs.
Everyone else is about the same

^^^ I’ve seen jobs paying 13-14 quid an hour and jobs paying 7 quid an hour.
How is everyone paid the same? Sure, there are a lot more jobs at the lower end. But that still doesn’t mean all jobs are the same…
Agreed, but…
There are driving black spots in the country where if you are going to be a driver in the short term then you have to accept that this is the going rate. I’m not saying it is right, but the alternative would possibly to go on social, and those that accept ( I include myself) do so because pride doesn’t allow that to be so. Immigration is certainly a big part to blame (rather than them grabbing benefits, they pay tax but have impacted on wages), however whilst we are not the most highly skilled, should it be that unreasonable to expect an average wage, for a 48 hour week, not having to do 60+ hours a week to scrape by. I passed my class 1 in 2005 and I’m on less now than I was back then, that is not how I thought it would be when I did my tests, but the driving sector has changed so much in that short time, god only knows what the older lasses / chaps must feel.
With that all said, my personal circumstances have changed too so the hours more than the wages is why I am looking into retraining to do something else, the thought of driving for another 10 years scares the hell out of me.

The average job works out between £9-10 p/h.
If your willing to work for the main wage then crack on.
Majority of the lads I speak to seem to be on the same money but different pay packages to make the hourly rate seem like a better deal.

So on a lorry load of cans of coke how much would it need to go up to give the driver another £1 an hour?
The fact is wages have gone down in real terms due partly to mass migration to the UK and the job is dumbed down to the point any moron can do it and the more I see of it the more I think the minimum wage is to much for some of the retards on the road
This is it in a nutshell
Labour opened the doors to all and sundry who can legally come and work here from countries where a typical monthly wage is less than some here will take home in a week.
This illustrates average monthly salaries across Europe

While this is all well and good you have to look at the bigger picture, how much does it cost to buy a house in Yorkshire?
My 2 bed maisonette near Oxford is worth £170k yet in Leeds a 3 bed maisonette is as little as £55k
No-one will pay high wages when the cost of living is low
