i would have asked for the instruction in writing or for the light to be reset, if not then a supervisor to stand at the rear of the trailor. otherwise i would not move because if something did occur then it would be my fault cos man in office would deny any such conversation had taken place.
basicly whatever is said you would be accused of ignoring h and s rules and the company policy.
don,t forget under h&s rules you can be found guilty be “what you don’t do” as well as what you do do .
I would have checked the door was closed and the ramp raised and pulled off, If someone is daft enough to open the door and fall off the ramp then that is natural selection at work If he happened to be driving a fork lift at the time, then Ron Dennis should be told about a replacement for Lewis Hamilton
many years ago i drove for a company in dublin.my son was a forklift driver there as well.
one fri night a truck pulled off the loading bay and my son went down,he was loading the trailer at the time.
i was there and saw it happen.
i dragged the driver out of the truck and did something illegal to him.
dont know if i hurt myself more, but i put him down.i am still not sorry for my action although i do rather a peaceful life,
my son could have been killed.
i am always careful and double check before moving off a loading bay.
i am not trying to play perfect driver, but it is plain commonsense.
i have no sympathy for this shunter, especially,a shunter should be aware of the dangers in his place of work.
no one here will condone drink driving, the error this shunter made is just as bad.
i agree he should be punished/re briefed on the procedures as you have said he is an experienced guy and red is red!
but…
should it really be 3 months? i think maybe a month to give hime time to reflect on what could have happened. that way he loses out on £600 ( a lot of cash in anyones book nowadays) but to be put in the warehouse for 3 months means he his being fined (effectively) £1800.
£600 you could sort of manage without if needs must but £1800, thats a lot of dosh to be going without.
why dont they put large yellow chocks on the front axle, there must have been some good reason why he drove off on a red light mind you i notice alot of people in leeds do it
im not defending the shunter but there are warehouse staff who dont always do what they should be doing.
making sure the light is on the right color is important.
id say the only thing thats not fair is the fact he,s losing money cuz that makes his family suffer aswell.what he did was wrong and an experianced driver should check just like wheelnut says. yes we all make mistakes but things like pulling off a red light could and has injured and killed people.he should keep his head down do his 3 months and thank his lucky stars he,s still gotta job
pulled off twice on red lights, both times i was given keys, paper work etc and told to go ,
after 4 hrs im not hanging round while they ■■■■ about with lights , theyve given my keys back so that too me, means im tipped and can go.

im with you on that one ady. if i have to hand my keys in and then im given them back with the paperwork, i dont care if the light is green red or pink. i drive off! like you said they waste enough of our time let alone waiting for some 1-brain-cell-up-from-pond-life 17 year old not changing a light over!

I’ll check then pull off the bay
We are always waiting on some jobsworth to shift themselves at RDC’s
some don’t even check the shutter is closed properly and I always report these incidents wether anything is done is another story
Company I work for has, after a few near misses, put in red/ green lights during the last two weeks.
Friday afternoon wanted a trailer off the bay , ( and being a holiday weekend was hurrying) hooked up to trailer after being told was ok to and waited for green light. And waited. And waited.
Finally went back in office and asked " am I under correct trailer 'cos i have still got a red light"
Supervisor gets on radio to warehouse super who replies " yes it’s OK to go, we’re too busy to close doors ".
As someone who made a BIG mistake a few weeks ago and managed to keep my job I was very reluctant to pull off without a green, but ALL Authorities were happy to let me.
Got myself a witness to the instructions and pulled off (safely) but got to ask myself … WHO WATCHES THE WATCHERS?
