a lot of people told me not to bother, i’m 37 now and have done lots of other jobs, but i took the plunge spent the money and havent looked back.
as others have said its long hours and a thankless job, but if your willing to get out and look there are jobs i started a month after passing my class 1 and made back the money i spent in no time.
you can earn good money, but you have to be prepared to do the hours/nights away etc.
I take home between 5-600 a week, but when when you consider the hours worked for this its not great.
better to have tried than always wonder though.
Go for it, give it a go, you won´t know unless you try, I drive because i have always wanted too, i´m not saying it will be easy but nowadays most things aren´t,. As Switchlogic said you don´t want later in life to have that big what if
anyway good luck with whatever you choose
It all depends…no one can really tell what YOU in particular want. Like you I wanted to drive trucks from a young age, I’m nearly 58 now but it’s only in the last ten years that I’ve scratched the itch, first on 7.5t and vans, then later biting the bullet and putting myself through class2 and then class1. Personally, I’ve never looked back, I drove for agencies for a couple of years on a part-time basis alongside my permanent job in a factory, then applied for and got my present job, which ticks most of the boxes. I really had to be patient and wait for the right job to come along before I bit the bullet and jacked in a job of 25 years standing, but I’ve never regretted it at all. On the other side of the coin I can remember several guys who passed their class 1 a little after myself, got into a couple of scrapes (like we all do), and were never heard of again, presumably got scared or had a bad experience, then gave it all up (and wasted a pile of money), before they really properly got to grips with it. My class1 instructor gave me a memorable piece of advice on passing my test, he said “now you’ve learned to pass a test with an unladen truck and no deadlines, curfews ect. to worry about. Now you’ve got learn to DRIVE a truck, a whole different ball game”, and so it’s proved. Nearly 6 years on I can still honestly say that I learn something new all the time, and I don’t expect that to change any time soon.
Sorry about the rambling, but what I’m trying to relate to you is to know your self before you go and a,spend a whole heap of money on training and driver cpc, and maybe giving up a good job? Even though I’ve only had my class1 6 years, the work scene has changed beyond recognition, mostly for the worst, so, just keep your eyes open and cover all your options.
i think if you want to do it then eventually you will, theres probably more competition for jobs now dont believe the stats about driver shortage! am not up on the costs of gaining your hgv but its probably a big investment, the pay is average just a normal jobs pay but the difference is your on your own most of the day and left to do as you please,
