Dog clips are not necessary in the rest of Europe!

Even if its not mandatory it takes approximate 5 seconds if that to clip it into It’s little hole and then I feel safer so as far as I’m concerned its a no brainer.
Me too; and why are there holes in it, and why does it come with a dog-clip fitted from new
They don’t normally come with a dog clip fitted, they are fitted at the dealers but only in the UK

And not always fitted in the UK either.
All our wagons have their standard height 5th wheels changed for low profile ones, fitted by the dealer. They all have the L shaped bar type locking device. None of them come with a dog clip as well.
I used to do a lot at Salvessons [Sainsbury’s] Worcester. They had Mercs with the eps box but replaced them with MAN/ERF’s.
The new units all had 5th wheels with the auto-catch fitted and no dog clip. All of a sudden they started to have trailers dropped in the yard because the drivers weren’t checking that the trailer was actually in contact with the 5th wheel. Luckily none of them got as far as the road.
Their first reaction was ‘training’. Can you imagine compulsory training - half a day - on coupling and decoupling. The real solution was to fit dog clips; which did nothing directly, but made the drivers look under the trailer.

this relates specifically to the 5th wheels with the L shaped bar that drops down when the jaws close. apparently its a bit of a grey area which obviously means the guy i reported a missing dog clip to doesnt actually know but he gave me a clip anyway. does anyone actually know for definate as in they have asked VOSA for a straight YES/NO answer?
Whilst it might not be mandatory it’s worth checking your employers stance on dog clips.
Where I work and if you should ever be so unlucky to drop a trailer and the clip is not in, there is a high chance of you collecting your things and saying bye bye job.
If the clip is in then you are going to remain in employment.
Any vehicles with clips missing should and are taken to the garage for a new one.
out of all the trailers that are lost on a daily basis few will have owt to do with dog clips most will have been hooked up so the pin is sat on top of the jaw
this is more common now with air suspension and drivers that wont wind the landing gear!

Well - i have made ours company policy
they are fitted so they must be used
if one of ours drops a load on it knees on a road i want proof the fith wheel arm was across - so if the clip is in place it means the arm was locked in place so the failure was elseware
cheers

that is what i am saying the clip can be in place if the pin is sat on top of the jaw!
the failure is often sat in the cab!
Since when ?
I was once held up by the MOT man at an inspection near Nottingham untill I inserted some sort of locking device because the dog clip was missing, I went to iron mongers and bought a large bolt
to drop in and they let me go.

That is what the thread is about, some sort of locking device, not necessarily a dog clip. Many companies expect a dog clip to be fitted even though the Fifth Wheel already has a proper locking device. It isn’t mandatory.
