I would like to bet all the guys advocating for compulsory 65 retirement have at least 20 yrs or so to go.
I’m 57 so it’s another 8 years for me, and you know what?. …That thought horrifies me my age bears no relevence to the way I feel, ie. nowhere near my age, seriously.
. I’m often taken for about 45 ( know what you are saying… …kidding himself ) and that’s how I feel, like it or not, as I said before my Dad has never looked his age, (although unlike me has always acted it. )
So if they said to you in 8 yrs time, that’s it give us your licence, imagine how that would feel to you guys now.
So you 40+ yr olds don’t be too quick to write people off.
If I said to you you are 60 in three years the way you would feel about that at 40 is exactly the way I feel about it now, you may as well say I will be 80 in 3 yrs that is how relevant it feels.
.
I know I have laid myself wide open to a lot of stick here , and bring it on I don’ t mind, but seriously it has nothing to do with age, it’s how you feel about yourself, how fit you are and how capable.
Driver-Once-More:
I retired 4 years ago at age 52 and I don’t miss it one bit, - work, that is.
Can’t fault you mate, but that’s the point you chose to, and the truth is if I could afford it I would also.
My point is, if and when I do jack, I don’t want to be TOLD to by somebody.
Two or three years ago Commercial Motor ran an article about an owner driver in his early 80s who was still running regularly from the UK to Morocco and back. He seemed fine except from his knees hurting more than they used to. However, I know a man of 70 who has stopped driving his car more than a few local miles because he doesn’t feel as confident as he used to. It’s down to the individual and their state of mind.

I have always said one day I’ll expire, but I’ll never be old…
Whilst some of the comments about letting younger people have a chance are all very admirable, the fact that driving trucks is unlikely to appeal to many younger people nowadays is a major contributing factor to the driver shortage. Years ago it was ok, but why spent a small fortune of your own money, to be stuck in endless traffic jams, or dossing in some filthy urine soaked overnight stopover. It is simply not an attractive ‘career’ path anymore. Drivers are treated worse now than they ever have been and it is the ‘old timers’ working past retirement age, that will keep the economy on its feet for a few more years yet.
Ain’t just Wales mate. And if you think that’s poor, next time you come across one of Mansel Davies’ drivers ask them what their hourly rate is. Or John Pearce, Glynneath.
Even in the Midlands, there are clowns that think they can get drivers for rigids at £7 hour and artics at £8 hour (or less). Now to me that is good pocket money for the pensioners, but have no idea how someone of regular working age would actually survive on that.
which is the worst , a 77 year old , fit and able with many years experience , or a newbie just starting out on the learning curve and full of his own invulnerability . there are plusses and minuses with all age groups . ill health and sudden medical events can strike anyone regardless of age and perceived fitness . having said all that i personally think the old buggers should retire asap and enjoy the time they have left .

Also less chance of the 77 yr old reading emails or checking ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ every 2 minutes instead of looking where they are going
Bit of a generalisation I admit but hey, the threads full of them
ow long is a piece of string, were all living longer or so the government say,may be put the limit up to eighty years old but you must have a medical every six months
