With the prisons, I used to regularly get asked by the imates if I could sneak em out in the back.
One Saturday afternoon while I was collecting the empty canteen distribution boxes at Ranby Nick, a guy ask if I’d let him hide in the back as he reconned he could be home drinking a beer or two in Nottingham by 8pm, to which I replied … No problem fella I’m going that way anyhow, but I explained the next stop after here “Ranby” was Whatton prison on the A52 where the truck would be parked over night so he could’ve sneaked out from there.
He suddenly decided to change his mind & not go, leaving myself and the prison ■■■■■■ in hysterics. How he knew that Whatton houses >1000 ■■■ offenders was …errrrm interesting

There bloody good payers though. Saw a job advertised a few months ago. 4 on 4 off. £35k a year!!! Class 2.
Its not just the prison deliveries though, the caged food is a nightmare. I tell ya none of the drivers were happy every single morning I was there. The turnover in drivers tells you everything, the guy I was second man to first day told me he was one of the longest serving drivers there. He had been there three months and the boss regarded him as knowing e erything about the job because he had been there such a long time!

yep salaried and they get every pennys worth. Go for it
I’m still with 'em… Started September ‘83, 3 days after leaving school. Freezer, w/hse picker, goods in and then on the road in the 7.5s from ’84 when I passed me test, up until 8 years ago and my class 1 job came up. Carried ■■■■ up more flights of stairs than most of you lot have done miles! As I’ve said before… If you don’t like hard work, don’t bother applying. If you take notice of Muckaways post, you think all the drivers are gimp squaddies…I’ve never actually known a squaddie who lasted more than a few days (talk the talk and all that bollox) and you don’t have to be built like a brick ■■■■■■■■■ or in your prime…all depots have old, scrawny 5’ 6" drivers still hard at it, day in, day out…the average age of a driver on multi drop is probably around the 50 mark

Mind if I ask how much you get paid now that you have been with them so long ? feel free to PM me if you wish. I’m just starting out in this game and am trying to get as much info as I can. Thanks.
If I get this job I will be on Agency wage of £9 an hour for the first 10 weeks
ta
I can see why some wouldn’t want to do this sort of work, after paying to have their nails manicured they’d be livid if they broke one whilst doing a mans job…

Agreed!
@Frankeh… PM sent…also, if full time, they do put you through the DCPC on how to use a tail lift, switch a fridge on etc etc!
£9/hour isn’t bad for class 2 but it’s a typical agency ■■■■ take if on for Bidvest.
I done it out of larbert for a few weeks and thought it was hard graft but a good job. Most drops I had was 8 in a day. Was all KFC, Burger king and nando’s etc. Lots of freebies and help yourself to lunch driver. Id go for it mate,
So I got offered the job even though I have no experience. So my next question is this, not being Charles Atlas what is the best way to move those huge pallets about ? Any tips would be welcome please. I have never done this type of work before so enlighten me. My first thought is how I would get one of those pallets up a kerb for instance or even a small incline if it can weigh up to 300KG.
Many thanks.

Hi Frankeh
Been doing Bidvest a few weeks myself. drop the rear air suspension to help you move the bloody great pallets down the wagon. Once you’ve half-killed yourself getting it to the tail-lift
either break the pallet down there and carry it into the store or drag the pallet as near to the back door as you can and move it from there. Big tip, make sure you grab a sack truck first thing at the depot, and I do mean FIRST THING, those things vanish fast, because handballing eight drops of frozen chicken/chips/veg oil by hand is NOT fun! If you’re dropping at kfc drive through, dont block the drive through with the wagon, they get SOOOOO miffed about that
If you get delayed, and you will, use the cab phone to ring transport to tell them so they can tell your next drop you’re going to be late. Have fun
Thanks for the reply dude. Mind if I ask if your agency or perm ? As I said earlier I am only getting £9 an hour on agency £10 if I use nova.
Also what shift pattern your doing ? Even which depot lol I don’t ask much do I
Thanks.
February 2015 they were offering starting from 10.50 I know that for sure since that’s what they offered to me, but I didnt go there - straight ot the schol door with 00,00,00,000 experience
The tough Multidrop, like Bidvest, Knights of Old Brakes(30+on annual starting) JJ Foodservice(25-28 on annual starting) in London on PAYE goes at least on 10.00 - 11.00 ph as far as I have seen.
Yep, I’ve got a nice job compared to that!
I have a monster sized tail lift and deliver a pallet, that’s it!
I don’t handball anything, but if a 300kg pallet is too much for you, you better get to a gym!
I’m no superman, so I think you’re underestimating the weight of some of the pallets.
As for kerbs I’ve no idea, I either drive over them or that’s where the pallet stops!
Best of luck pal!

Just what I was thinking. I used to have to pumptruck pallets weighing upto 1.2t and I’m sure some of the pallet guys on here have posted about it before.
300kg is alright aslong as you have a smooth (ish) surface and it’s fairly level.
Frankeh:
So nobody has anything good to say about them ? If this is the case how do they stay in business ?
Because there is an infinite amount of drivers out there. All of them are willing to work for peanuts. It doesn’t matter if a driver does only 1 day and jacks it. They’re will be someone else doing his job the following day.

If it’s a full pallet going into a single fast food outlet or something, I suspect you’ll more often than not be breaking the pallet down and handballing it through the door, so you’d just leave it on the tail lift.
