If you weren't a truck driver what would you do?

ezydriver:
I wrote and photographed a feature article for Classic Truck (front page no less :sunglasses: ), and a couple of things for Truck & Driver, so transport journalism would be excellent, especially for classic stuff. I also like philosophical thinking, psychology, and the human mind, so have always hankered towards existential therapy. Then there’s HGV fitter work. I’d have loved the experience so I could have the knowledge, contacts, and confidence to restore an old 70s or 80s lorry. But ultimately, I’d like to be a digital nomad, wandering around living in a stealthy off-grid motorhome earning my crust online somehow, carefree and unhurried - essentially tramping without a trailer, destination, or deadline

Same, done a few articles for T&D (and hopefully more in future, one is about to come out) and always enjoy it. You’ve just reminded me photography would be great too, been into it in a big way since I was a kid and used to spend my lunchtimes at school in the dark room developing my films, loved it. In fact just found my old film Canon SLR so going to start using that again in addition to my current digital camera, Olympus OMD, a micro four thirds and best camera I’ve ever owned

After 14 years of HGV driving, I applied to join the police. I wasn’t unhappy with driving, still loved it in fact and had a great job driving an artic car transporter but my local force was recruiting and I’d always fancied having a go at the job. I was 35 at the time (been a wagon driver since 21) and kept passing recruitment stages until I got a letter with a start date, collar number and division to report to. Did that for 17 years (with a sabbatical year off when I went back to driving). Took early retirement 2 years ago, renewed my HGV licence, did 35 forking painful hours of DCPC and now I’m back at it aged 54. I’m only playing at it these days but really enjoying life!

if I could turn the clock back, I would have gone into the RAF

Yea that was my dream

Forever kicking myself I didn’t join at 16 :frowning:

I did join at 16 (Technician Apprentice, Airframes/Propulsion). My only regret is that I didn’t stick with it. I was young, (very) naive and, if truth be told was simply homesick and jacked it in.

Greetings from a former 136 entry Halton Brat! Fond memories of Muppet Manor, and all that. Plus the daily parade and march down the hill to the workshops to the beat of the bloody awful ‘Band’!

And don’t get me started on that sodding goat!!!

But to answer the OP’s question I might have tried my hand at commercial saturation diving for the oil industry. Stuck in a metal box waiting to tip at an RDC, or being sent up to British Gypsum on spec for a load must be good practice for 4 day deco stops!
