Anchored tankers lead to North Sea congestion
Navigating waters off the Suffolk coast is being made more complicated because of a growing number of large anchored merchant ships. More than 25 tankers and freighters, many over 100,000-tonnes, have chosen to anchor there rather than pay port dues while awaiting orders.Most of the ships are anchored around 10-12 miles offshore between Southwold and Lowestoft. A Maritime & Coastguard Agency spokesman said the number of vessels was being monitored.
“They are perfectly entitled to anchor there,” she said, “and we don’t have any powers to move them on”.
