I need some honest serious advice

Mikey D:
I believe you won’t get deducted workplace pension until you’ve done 3 months service , unless you request that you want to opt in straight away .
That’s the case where I work anyway . Assume it’s the same for everyone .?

Theres defo a grace period. Also a lower limit on earnings to qualify for it too.

OP, I know you have a Temp position and that is good but did you ever enquire with your local Job Centre when you were unemployed if there was any Training Funding for HGV Training. Halfway through my recent training, I noticed that the DWP would have put me through the whole process FOC with a Job placement upon pass completion. Obviously, it was too late for me.

Also, something to bare in mind, when you complete your Medical for HGV, they ask if you have had any Mental Health problems in the last 5 years and I am not sure if they reference this back?

If its serious advice you want then you will have to lie through your teeth unless you want to never work again
You won’t get a job picking up ■■■■ on the street telling people you were sick for 10 years
Just do what you have to do or say
You have nothing to lose
Good luck

I thought they stopped putting people on those kinds of courses years ago? Anyways I’m happy I have a full tim temp position, just going to take it one step at a time and if I can pad my CV out enough by the time I do my truck licence I won’t even have to mention my work gap or my depression.

Not a chance in hell I’m going to let a mental health condition which had a specific trigger, which has since let up considerably, stand in the way of my trucking career.

Just got a call from a recruitment agency, I start work on Tuesday unloading delivery trucks in a warehouse. I know it’s nothing amazing but I’m going back to work!

It’s for 12 weeks and then if they keep me on it will be until March, that should be enough to get the ball rolling.

Doesn’t matter that it isnt ‘amazing’ (I spent 5 years loading trucks after school and it was hard work but good fun), it’s a start and it gets you back.into routine and a real entry on your cv.

Great news and you should be proud of yourself.

Good point mate. Why on earth would anyone save up their hard earned for a LGV licence when they can get one free from the tax payer?
I suppose that could help with the enormous driver shortage. In theory, if we had a [zb] load of drivers suddenly available, it would halt the crazy escalation of wages that employers are sloshing out to us at the minute as well… :unamused:

Ye l thought that myself until l saw a poster on the course which if l had noticed earlier would have saved me £2000+ :frowning: .

Anyway, good luck with your quest for HGV.

Honestly I wouldnt mention your hardships to any potential employer. Dont give them the opportunity to cast judgement. After all its business at the end of the day and a long term history of mental health struggles will turn many employers off. The main thing a firm wants out of a driver is being reliable.

As others have said, get creative and manufacture a work history. 9 times out of 10 employers will never even bother checking or asking for references in this game.

Maybe you ran your own small scale business for 10 years and now at this stage in your life would prefer a more stable income?

Been living on inheritance, while keeping busy with part time work.

To be blunt mate, other people dont really care what card you have been dealt in life. Its a ruthless old game. Sometimes you gotta stack the deck in your favour to get ahead.

First off big congrats on the job front op, and above all else for finding the courage to break the chains and get going again, and for that I wish you the best of British, you will flourish as you’ve already took the hardest steps, the rests now down to your grounds keeping skills [emoji106]

Now if I may I’ve a little tip I’ve used over the years, which I hope may be of use too you if your not aware of it…

Once your paying tax, and IF you can afford to do so, I’d highly recommend NOT saying a word to the agency about the emergency tax code im pretty certain your going to be issued due to your spell off HMRC radar.

OP I’m not sure if your aware or not but its actually your responsibility to chase HMRC if your tax/code is wrong, so be it paying too much or too little or NOT KNOWING WHAT AMD EMERGENCY TAX CODE IS, cough cough [emoji38]

So should any agency or employers mention your on one, or paying too much I’d simply say ‘no fears me dears alls in hand’ and toddle off for a spot of lunch, but be mindful to be sure your over paying and not under!!

It’s rare you’d be under paying if your PAYE but keep an eye, trust me if your earning £150 a week an only payin £1.50 I’d be on phone… (BUT NOT TO HMRC OR ANY AGENCY /EMPLOYER!!)…

BUT A FRIENDLY INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISORY BODY [emoji6][emoji6]

On the other hand if your paying £20+ I’d be getting amnesia for 12+ months [emoji6][emoji106]

NOW I’d recommend doing as I do and treat that little loop hole, once sure your on the up stream of it, as a nice little savers account that will help with your next steps, so I’d already be looking for the next role to do if/when your current one may Finish as those employment cross overs generate all sorts of time consuming paper work that gets left unattended over many many months… (16 of em for me this time, knew I were [zb] at math for a reason [emoji38])… then HMRC notice it and send you a little reminder that woops they owe YOU money…

Such bloody idiots they are [emoji849][emoji38]

It’s one of the many reasons why I like to change jobs just around the spring time, mostly due to the financial authorities being so busy I feel its rude to bother them during such times, times of austerity can be of great blessings [emoji16]

As an example, Tax year before last I received a very nice three figure rebate, at a cost of about £25 a week to pocket wage, nae bother i dropped to tesco diesel instead of shell rocket juice, and scrapped a couple little luxuries.
I grew up poor so I know how to make bread stretch…
Well that paid for class two licence, so job done [emoji106]

Just recieved another rebate this week funnily enough and that’s gone straight to paying back family who leant me for my class one, so short term loss has helped the long term aims [emoji6]

It’s all just a case of being able to spot the little blessings amongst the nails, and taking a few nails to be able to spot the blessings, Lord gives us what we need, not what we want, upto us to interpret it, and go forth from it [emoji6]

Now get cracking, and Best of luck bud [emoji6][emoji256]

Well I’ve claimed enough money from benefits in the last 10 years  time to give some back :astonished:

I wish there were a few more with your attitude and integrity.

Can’t offer any more advice other than to keep at it, don’t let the crap jobs get you down, stay positive… and good luck!
