I miss driving a manual, do you?

Bassman:
Switchlogic,

I have,nt driven a high horsepower truck with an auto box fitted. I have driven trucks up to 480 with an auto box and a 620 Scania with a manual box.
I could see that in the wrong hands a big engine could do some damage to a clutch and drive train, do you not think that a full ( Allison type ) auto box would be better able to give the benefits and protect the truck?
Leaving aside the debate that driving an auto is " boring", do you not think that would make a High horsepower truck a better allrounder?

Cheers Bassman

I dare say if Volvo thought their flagship would be better with a full auto they would use one. My truck with its iShift is as perfect as any truck I’ve driven or probably am likely to.

I’d also bet my last £ that Volvo have been trying all configurations of transmission, as have Merc, Scania etc as they all offer lockable torque converter in their ‘STGO’ heavy haulers as well as construction & off road equipment.

I appreciate that Volvo or MAN, or Merc. have explored all angles in high power engines but my query was would a full .auto reduce the damage risk possible in the wrong hands.
I am a fan of the I-shift but at that power ,unless software in the box has been modified to cope with it I believe in the wrong hands it could be expensive

Cheers Bassman

I’m still undecided after a couple of months with this…I’m veering towards an auto but only because we’re in laaaaandon and other major cities across Europe quite a bit and in traffic i’d want an auto everytime…

Surely you don’t think they are all programmed the same? That a 460 is programmed exactly the same way as a 750? I see no way in which a truck equipped with iShift could be abused to the point it’s expensive, be it a 750 or a 420. In fact a full auto may struggle to cope with the torque, but I’m no engineer so I don’t know

Earthmovers & large plant often have well more power & torque than any road vehicle and they always have full auto transmissions.

Completely different kettle of fish though to be fair. Maybe I should have put ‘to cope with the torque in a road vehicle’

Edit - Actually having looked at that link they have a similar amount of torque to my lorry. Besides, in my short time working on forestry machines and construction equipment many weren’t direct drive and those that were had various torque converters

I didn’t imply driving a auto any less of a man what I said is that it’s more like a steering wheel attendant as just about everything is done for you and the more technology that comes into trucks the less the driver has to do. Yea I drive a manual and if you drive the Eaton properly it’s not much different to using the scania opti cruise just using the clutch to start and stop you just get to choose what gear you use

Switchlogic

The reference made to Construction plant and torque converter boxes was the sort of thing I had in mind when I posted the query.Anybody with a bit of commonsense can drive/operate one without causing damage to the machine.
I have seen the I-Shift abused, even to the extent of a driver stalling it in gear through not bothering to change out of manual and also stalling through trying to set off with the handbrake on. That’s without the end less running in manual to try and get another 2 k’s on the speed ( I know it doesn’t work), and all this with a 420. Imagine the result with a 750.
Unfortunately ,we aren’t all considerate drivers who take a bit of pride in what we do, so I shudder to think what an inconsiderate driver could do with 750hp under his (or hers ) backside.
Many thanks for your input.

Last night i did a shift in an 11 plate DAF XF and it had one of these…

and i preferred it to an automatic as i felt like i was actually driving the truck for a change !!

i miss an auto :frowning:

you can have my manual.
No Air Con
Manual windows
No charger socket
Crap speakers
Supposedly a 340 daf CF but think most of the horses have escaped

Good side shift is only 8 hours max

Did have a scania 440 opti cruise on saturday
more refined and felt ok after 14 hour shift

No, Auto for me, got a dog that does my barking, need an auto that does my gear changing, just need something to steer the ■■■■ thing for me so I can get some shut eye at work. Even got an auto car…

Ah right. Good points but one thing I would say is you’re unlikely to see an inconsiderate driver with a couldn’t care less attitude in a 750. Id say you’d have to be the sort of driver that takes great care of his truck to be considered for one in the first place. I’m certainly not the worlds best driver but I look after any trucks I’m trusted with like they are my own and I feel that’s at least part of the reason I was given such a chance, and Id say that’s probably the case with most owners of 750s
