I fail to understand

Its all to do with “The Look At Me” syndrome.

Noisey exhausts, mohican hairdos, tattoos, the list is endless. Some people just like others to look and talk about them thats all.
Reversed vanity.

Some drivers work to live others live to work, what’s the problem?

I completely agree with you spannerman.
I love seeing motors that are well looked after and taken care off. Gives a good impression of both the company and the driver. Getting a complement about your vehicle from a member of the public or another driver is a great feeling. Its not a bad thing to see units looking done up, you never know it might attract some new blood to the industry.
Tell you a fleet that i have always liked and thats George Green transport (think thats what they are called, black and sliver colours) not over the top but they always look the business.

We are without doubt, a strange profession, many postings recently are of truckers out of work, warnings of poor payers, owner drivers asking about what this firm and that firm are like to work for, and generally the dire state of the industry etc.
Yet at Truckfest there will be no doubt row upon row of “blinged up” trucks. Those trucks belonging to owner drivers I can possibly understand. Although they are obviously on far better rates than I have ever found!
The trucks that mystify me are those belonging to companies which have been embellished by their drivers, cleaned and polished with no pay.
Drivers who with good reason complain about their poor pay manage to find the money for light bars LED’s and all the other adornments which they happily fit to a truck that doesn’t belong to them.
An engine driver doesn’t go to the depot all day Saturday and clean his diesel engine, nor does a British Airways pilot pay for loads of chequer plate to smarten up his beloved 747.
I have heard all the reasons, “Well I live in my truck”, “I take a pride in my truck” etc.
I would appreciate if someone out there could explain to me what the real reason is.

Is it hurting you Snail?

People do it because they want to…no harm in it.

Now this was once a mystery to me too, I could understand a set of wheel trims or frilly curtains (if that’s your thing) as they can move from one motor to another, but once you start drilling holes then the bling becomes a permanent fixture to someone elses lorry & that is taking it a bit too far, unless you’re earning that much money that you don’t know what to do with it & as a lorry driver that is pretty unlikely, now that’s the logical view.

The other way of looking at is, I personally like a few extra lights & shiny bits on a lorry & as I spend more time in the lorry than any other place on earth I could justify it by wanting to make my surroundings more to my taste, after all it’s perfectly normal behaviour to decorate rooms or plant a few flowers in the garden of rented accomodation, so what’s the big deal about decorating or adding a few bits to a lorry?

I’m lucky, I had a pretty good starting point with my current ride, I have, with the permission of my boss, added a few bits myself, I get fully reimbursed but after seeing the improvements it has made, in hindsight I would’ve put my hand in my pocket anyway.

Ih ave said much in the past re this subject and i still feel the same way BUT , since then i am increasingly more concerned about the standard of driving rather than the “bling”. In a big percentage of cases alot of trolley dollies and such like are the same (drives a truck but no manners) . i do find that very rude and unprofessional. it does not matter what type/how blinged up/how new/old at the job you are, COMMON COURTESY COSTS NOTHING ,so when someone does do that for you please please say thanks by the usual methods. I am on hols now for 2 weeks then i give it a month and from my point of view if things don’t improve do i
carry on as is
just ignore eveyone and stay in lane 1 and let you struggle to enter motorway
or am i being to fussy etc
i thought we had improved our standing as drivers since i started but maybe im wrong :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

No catman, it aint hurting at all. Just a question. I often ask questions when I don’t understand something.
