This ^^^^ I’ve driven that way for years. I didn’t call it hypermiling, I called it driving properly when in a company vehicle and I called it saving money in order to buy more beer when in a vehicle I owned.
Apart from motorcycles of course, there’s no fun to be had in fuel economy there.
Absolutely spot on and exactly my way for years. Wish I met you lot on the roads but it never seems to be that way.
Most seem to drive like they don’t have a second to spare. The fools just don’t do anyone or anything any favours.
One day they might realise their stupidity but I doubt it.

What you rightly describe is the Driver Attitude of :- I’m not paying for it why should I care, The same mentality also shows when you hear complaints about the price of Gas / Diesel and you see the complainants flooring the Accelerator. I note a comment from Adam, saying if it was Manual he would do it and of used to do it. But now in an Automatic he doesn’t? What he and the others don’t realize is that even with an automatic when you remove the foot from the throttle, you will automatically start to slow, due to the decelerator and the lower demand for fuel, which even in an Automatic will result in the vehicle slowing down resulting in cost efficiency. And regardless of what is claimed, as I stated previously, if you control your speed and space you are more aware of the driving environment and less likely to be a statistic.
tailgating saves a ton of fuel too OP
I cannot believe the responses to this thread (most of them). What I cannot believe is that the majority on here drive the way I think is better all round (as I always try to drive economically within the bounds of safety, getting the job done, not holding others up etc. etc.) and yet I NEVER experience this from others on the road. Maybe it’s because those drivers are driving the same way, so I and they never catch each other up IYKWIM. What with fuel costs and the climate, we should all try to do our bit.
Yes, slipstreaming is a hypermiling tip, as is “pulse and glide”, presumably the latter with the engine off. Neither is to be recommended for a big truck.
