How many hours is acceptable?

I’m lucky the job I’m in allows 9 1/2hrs per shift on the run I do so I just plod on as I’m normally done in 8 or 81/2 hours , No sweat no panic nice and steady …

what part of the country are you in to be quoting these kind of figures sweepster?

I’d say average wage of someone went to uni was more like 30-35k for normal office hours

You’d be surprised. Many university leavers would disagree with that comment.

Do about 50 hours a week thats enough for me moneys ok not the most glamouous of jobs but gives me enough to get by on and time to have a life outside work.

disagree in what way?
I’m just going by what friends of mine make

secondary school teacher 34k
town planner 33k
various IT jobs all just over 30k
mate with some kind of accounting degree, left a 31k job because of a generous voluntary redundancy offer, partly due to location but he’s now on 25k

these are all people in their early thirties

Cheers not long to go now

40 hours a week contracted, 10 hours overtime at time and a half is a reasonable amount. Good balance of work and a life!!!

50-52 hours enough for me. Minimal nights out. £30k a year. Thats enough for me.

Bit of an odd question really. Theres two arguments really , which the previous posts have highlighted. One has gone off on the usual wages tangent and the other on whats realistic. As far as im concerned ,road transport has always and probably always will mean long hours ,for whatever pay you can realistically afford to live on/bring a family up on. If you like it or not , this job really is a lifestyle. Too many people come into this industry from the armed forces ,or the job centre, thinking its all ,open road , do what you want , king of the road, im my own boss. In reality its just not true as they soon find out . Then they come on here whinging and moaning about hours and money blah blah. Im quite lucky in having a job I like with a decent employer, but, hey, ive done all the ■■■■ getting here, its just the nature of the game. That and plus, all ive ever wanted to do since a kid is drive lorrys is maybe why Im happy in my work.

Sorry, went off on one there and forgot the original post. Well I do really what the job requires, usually around 70 hrs a week. But that is on euro work , so there you have your answer. It all depends on what the individual is doing.

+1

At my place we are contracted to 45 hrs, but regularly exceed 50+ which we are not paid for. I don’t mind doing an extra hour when needed but friday took the ■■■■. 12.5 hrs but only paid for 9 hrs. Hence why I will be looking round for a different firm.
I will pretty much work the hours that are needed to fulfil the job, i would just like to be paid for them.

I don’t get the quote
" Too many people come into this industry from the armed forces ,or the job centre, thinking its all ,open road , do what you want , king of the road, im my own boss. In reality its just not true as they soon find out ."

Dare I ask what is the problem with Ex Forces? I did 23 years, finished in a respectable position, and now have gone back in to driving. I enjoy driving for a living, bit of money for old rope type of thing. Why is there so much bad feeling against ex forces?

Cheers

Not having a go at ex forces. There are some good drivers I’ve met and work with now who are ex forces. From what they’ve told me, when they come up for leaving they are retrained in some form of trade to do when they go back into civvy street. A lot see lorry driving like I said in my previous post, They get there class one and head off into the sugar coated world of big money and the romance of king of the road . Then find out it doesn’t work out. Same goes for the long term unemployed who the government put through the test to get them back to work. Just my opinion going by what ex forces personnel have told me and by a driver trainer friend told me about the job centre sending him people to train.

Some wise words in this thread. Think I’m going to hammer in the overtime whilst I’m still young, so I don’t have to when I’m older.

I regularly do several weeks in a row away at a time doing Euro work, so I guess you could argue that is 168 hours per week, but in reality my actual working time averages out at around 40 hours per week. I am young and enjoy the work, so quite happy to put in the time. That might change as I get older.
