I put my first truck on the road in 1985 and wobbled around with a few quid in my pocket until about 1991. I was told that if you hadn’t got enough fat on your back in three years, then you may as well drive for someone. I didn’t listen and ended up in Romania with a broken engine.
When I looked in the fat store there was only a couple of packs of lard, and not enough to replace the lorry.
Would I do it again, probably not, Did I enjoy myself, certainly did and I learned a lot which still holds me in good stead today.
Started on my own in '94. I had £5000 & the bank loaned my the same amount, when the first cheque dropped through the letterbox 60 days (ish) later I was down to just below £500. It did get better, then I made the mistake of buying more lorries to cover the work I was offered, there’s definately truth in the addage the only thing you increase is the headache. Went bust in 2002 when, amongst other problems, the bank manager decided that my customers were no longer “credit worthy” enough.
Now I get a wage every week, sick pay, holiday pay &, for what it will be worth, a pension.
Am I glad I done it? YES
Would I do it again? NO
Been there, done that & all I’ve got left is the t shirt !!!
Got 2 1/2 on the road at the mo used to have 6 but not worth the headaches and the incessant 24 hrs of ringing phones, still profitable (just) but have have started subbing out a lot recently and am really getting to like it so it might be something I’ll do more of and come off the road altogether.
This will give you an idea of how enforcement has changed. Around 20 years ago (you might be able to date it better than me from what i say about the tacho) i was in a partnership with another guy and we had a petfood wholesalers. We bought, taxed and insured a 7.5 tonner with a tail lift. We ran this for about three years without incident. I can’t recall whether it was a DAF or what ever but it was an ex PO van. It was fitted with a tachograph which we never used, we thought it was only for Post Office workers !!! So yes i’ve run one, without incident or O licence
I think tachos where new at the time, in any case we never knew about them !!
