Tipper Tom:
It’s nonsense to say you’re not allowed an inspection pit any more. My old mob have just put a pit in and have had an H & S audit for insurance purposes
Just repeating what we were told, in fact this subject came up during my cpc course and again people said they had been banned due to fumes settling in pits.

The workshop where my trucks are maintained has 2 pits, they’ve just had an insurance inspection too , the pits are fine, they’ve just had to put some plastic chain around the pits and across the doors !

SORRY if you know different.
So, if VOSA say you are not allowed an inspection pit for H&S reasons, how do they carry out MoT’s?

pits are still alive and well and allowed…with todays engines what comes out the exhaust is cleaner than what went in via the air filter…so wouldn’t worry about fues
I can’t remember what exactly but a few years ago issues about gas welding cars in pits was no longer allowed ?car lifts were to be used instead ,could this be it.

i do have a halford’s tool box, and yeah it has suffered some quite bad abuse, including when i was away, a work colleague though he was a race driver in the van, and the box went over. but it survived quite well, the o.e lock is crap though
Bloody hell he must of been kaneing it. Normally all the breakdown vans iv looked in there secured down good and proper… I’d of been kicking off that’s for sure!!

yeah I would have kicked off too if some numpty went off and left his frigging toolbox unsecure in the van I was expected to drive.I would have have gone round every corner as fast as I could and ■■■■■■ it then smacked him one for leaving the ■■■■ there
hey I’d only been with company 2 day’s, and was chucked in at the deep end, so the tool’s went in, and off I went, I wasn’t in on the Saturday, so when I came on the Monday, I’d found that it was driven by the young’un on the Saturday, found out later that week, mine wasn’t the only one over during that week…
he also been known and seen to have a drive style not suited for van driving…

Wow times must have changed, we used to lock all our tools away would never leave them in a vehicle, mind you back in early 1980’s my tools cost £1000 and that was subsidised by the garage, I imagine nowadays 5k of tools would I leave those in a van over the weekend ? NO
20 years in the motor trade and I have no problem with any Halfords tools, found them pretty good. Back in the day before I got weighed down with a mortgage, wife and kids I was probably the Snap On man’s best customer, I had around £20k’s worth. Sold a bit of it inc the big boxes when I came out of the trade but have kept everything else. Snap On is great if you can justify it (they will be with you for a lifetime) but Halfords/Britool/Teng etc are just as good, perhaps not quite so shiny!!
A lot of tipper operators this way do quite a bit of their own maintenance. Some are on contracts for maintenance with main dealers,as they bought new vehicles etc.
Got some good looking spanners here but all they got on is chrome vanadium ,made in Germany ,normaly ones that have that snap or don’t last but I’ve had them 20 years .
For my two pence worth, I spent 28 years in the motor trade as an mechanic,MOT tester, workshop controller & finally garage owner. Snap on tools are the best and are worth the investment but ONLY if your using them for 8 -10 hours a day 5/6 days a week, for situations outside those circumstances anything else is fine, but that’s just my opinion.
Denis F:
As for tools, Snap on is overpriced, and Halfrauds is crap ! I tend to use Draper/Sealey stuff
I take it this is intended as humour. Draper used to make brilliant tools.
Now they’re a load of fall apart rubbiah
It wasn’t intended as humour, maybe the fact most of my tools are 20+ years old explains it
I’ve got some of the new 6 point Draper Expert sockets and have given them some abuse with no problems, they took a busted locking wheel nut of my brothers Focus the other day no bother at all,I’ve got a mix of Snap on,Draper,Sealey and some old Gedore stuff but to me the Draper stuff is good enough and cheap enough to replace if you do over abuse it.For some real tool snobs and some impressive/expensive set ups have a look here garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=466
after 50 or so years in the job,i find it aint what you pay for the tools its how you use them.a kit costing &100 can do just same as one costing thousands.you cant eat tools.lol.
