I got hopelessly lost one trip while on the transit route around Warsaw and ended up in the city centre somehow, I stopped by the side of the road and was passed by a bus with Balystock on the sign at the back, lucky as it was there that I had to go through so I set off to follow him, all went well till he went off at a slip road to cross the river and noticed the weight limit sign. Oh well too late to worry now I thought but I did in fact worry (a lot) when I saw in me passenger mirror the blue flashing lights !!
This was in the days when we were advised to keep 10 DMs in your driving license, one in your passport and hide the rest and do not insist or require a receipt.
Sitting in the back of a Polish police car is like being in a mobile holding cell and not to be recommended

For Saudi - Used the Daily Telegraph World Atlas and added the missing roads with a Biro0
There were a lot of roads/areas in Saudi that didn’t appear on maps! Maybe top secret or had been built since the map was published even if it was the previous year the way Saudi was developing in the late 70s/early eighties.
Most drivers would share their experience on the outbound ferry to help other drivers. Just used to ask ‘anyone here been to X’ and someone would pipe up. Once asked a driver directions to a remote spot in Holland and he gave turn by turn directions with all the road numbers from memory like you would in your home town!
BTW I used to switch the tacho off after entering Poland. Anyone else do this when entering Poland or any other non tacho country ?
I also still have a pile of town and city plans for various European cities, still not chucked them out along with a pile of UK A-Zs.
Apart from that just asked, still don’t use a sat-nav to this day.
Well, thanks for all the interesting answers. Does anybody have some stories about getting well and truly lost or stuck somewhere in the back of beyond?
Well there was one night back in around 1990 when I chased all over Lyons looking for the Rue Adumas as it said on the paperwork. Eventually dawned on me that it should have been Rue A.Dumas (of 3 musketeers fame). Found it straightaway then.
Hang on…OLDTIMERS■■? grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
