We have the same here. We buy local whenever we can. We have a butchers/seafood shop near us. The meat is all local and bacon is fantastic. They have their own prawn trawler and most of the seafood is local. The big boys sell Bassa from the filthy area around the Mekong Delta but we wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole. We also have a local chippie, once again with their own trawler so we’re lucky as far as that goes. Local fruit and vegie in season, so we’ve got it made. We pay a bit more for the good stuff but it’s well worth it for the taste alone, let alone the fact it’s not got a load of crap in it. Oh and a local dairy too.
I still can’t get rid of this bloody gut.

Grampian Chicken is Grampian Country Foods: established in Scotland 1980, they were sold to VION Holdings a Dutch company, in 2008.
There was an associated company, Grampian Foods Siam, in Thailand, that was sold off in 2009, by VION.
Two Sisters acquired the UK arm of Vion in March 2013.
Two Sisters sold off Goodfellas Pizzas in 2018 but still has Fox`s Biscuits, Hollands Pies, and fresh and frozen food businesses.
It has 23,000 employees and, by turnover, is the largest UK food company.

2015 Statista shows total UK poultry meat imports of about 400,000 tonnes of which 38.000 tonnes were non EU sources.

Does some the 193,000 tonnes of Dutch poultry meat we imported originate elsewhere? I don`t know how reliably all the above figures were gathered. However Dutch poultry meat production in 2018 was about 1,100,000 tonnes. (statista again).
Due to the trade deals in place the EU specifies the conditions under which imported meats are raised, and may impose tariffs. We can avoid lower welfare standards by foreign farmers undercutting our own high welfare farmers.
Any future deals with new partners will need to worked out. As a single country, post Brexit, rather than as part of a big trading block, will we better placed to negotiate? Will we get a better deal for our farmers or will we sacrifice standards to gain access to fresh markets for our exporters?
We export some chicken meat, but import more. Most of our imports, by far, are from the EU. Some is from Thailand and Brazil.

As opposed to the British (Indian) Chicken industry who look after their birds so well.
Before Grampian, the country was called DB Marshall or Marshall Food Group and they were feeding their chickens on offal which came from the supermarkets who were buying these birds. They also had an issue with the feed which killed many of their stock, so Marshall ceased to exist and Grampian took over. This was around the time of Mad Cow Disease.

Lets not forget how we all used to live a few hundred years ago. the chicken would be left out in the sun for days on end and if it got a bit maggoty then you just scrap the maggots off.
You can also save up the maggots to mash em up and or just eat them raw.
Nowadays if someone has a hair in their food they get rushed to A&E for a stomach pump.
I think we are too pampered in this country go to a food market in China and see the state of the food. On display for 12+ hours and almost all of it unrefrigerated. Although to be fair most of the food is still breathing.

It’s obvious that farming is all dependent on climate which obviously counts out huge swathes of Australia being too hot and too dry.Having distant family there I do know that Victoria is as good as Oz gets for farming.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. I’m a Fallen stock (dead farm animals) collector and we also handle butchers waste and out of date food from the supermarkets
During the summer , naturally, there are lots of maggots etc and sometimes you just can’t help but get covered in them plus all sorts of other ■■■■ that runs out of the dead animals etc.
I am never ill and neither are any of the guys I work with. A mate of mine works in a swimming pool and is constantly washing his hands etc. He seems to always be ill and catching bugs etc.
I think what I’m trying to say is that yes we are far too pampered these days.

There is such a thing as being too clean. Your body adapts to the environment be sensible with your personal hygiene and working with dead beasts or sewage is ok if not very pleasant.

Wheelnut, you are wrong, yes, it was DB Marshall, but the feed was not offal from supermarkets, it was the dead birds on the farms that were collected and ground down and cooked and mixed with the feed from their own mills, so, in effect, no waste, all the dead ones were collected from the farms and taken bzck to the factoy to be cooked, I was that driver.
