Hourly rate disparity

Are we not talking about two seperate cross-purposes here?

FULL time jobs - OLD hand gets cushy contract, new starters get crappy contract.
AGENCY jobs - New hands get cushy contract, old hands - resent it very much - but don’t have the balls to vote with their feet and do exactly the same - leave FT and go agency
…which is why there’s a log jam between “shifts available” and “shifts coverable”. :bulb: :bulb:

There wouldn’t even be agency workers there if the full-timers clamped down on it - unions used to fight casualisation and force firms to man their operations properly.

What they have traded is others’ job security for their own - and then complain when the rates soar for agency workers who have no job security.

And their complaints ring hollow, because like you say, most won’t give up the security for the higher rate. Haha, they daren’t even face the market, which they say should determine others’ pay when it happens to be lower than their own!

What we’re seeing in this thread is an exposition in how the right-wing union member thinks. His commitment is not to the working class, or even to his own kids as workers, but to himself. He does not have the solidarity of the fighter. He is willing to make no sacrifice. He is merely one of a number of grafters, a member of the union by convenience whilst he’s filling his own boots, even at the expense of his own co-workers.

Such thinking has governed for a generation, and that is probably why the rich have never been richer whilst the working class of this country are not just substantially poorer but now positively dying in a crisis of reproduction.

Won’t even face the market?
Precisely what I did do when I took my contract.

I prefer the protection and known income of a contract. Horses for courses.

As for a union man protecting himself.

I’ve been rep for a very short period.

So far I’ve secured a 2 grand retention bonus.

Ridden a horse and cart through one investigation process so that a gross misconduct sackable offence became a verbal warning.

Seen 1 worker sacked… and through highlighting the absurdity of the investigation and sanction will be reinstated soon.

During this time I’ve also garnered a management complaint internally and to my union …both of which I’ve seen off.

So, I’ve achieved things of no benefit to myself at personal risk (complaints etc) but yeh… this post undoubtedly proves your point, all Union members are just put for themselves [emoji6]

Indeed, but if you’re one of those complaining that others are getting better market rates since you accepted your contract, then the hypocrisy would stink.

No that’s not what I said at all. I’m in favour of unions and union members.

The objection I raised was where union members permit differentials to be established (and maintained) amongst the workforce based on nothing more than the vagaries of market forces over time, and secondly I then laughed at the idea of those with job security complaining with envy at the rates commanded by those without, when those individuals do not even have the backbone to give up their job security for the higher rate.

I’m more one of those negotiating better terms and conditions for all contracted staff.

I’d be a fool not to.

That’s what unions should be doing. Unfortunately USDAW seems to be in the pocket of Tesco. Shop workers only got 2.5% this year with no vote despite being classed as key workers and working through the pandemic. USDAW has failed a huge percentage of its members right there.

Agreed…the union at your place is YOUR union. It should work to what local members want…not what Regional Office says you should have.
