HMRC & night out money.

And it’s probably that [zb] company that is partly if not wholly the reason HMRC got onto the whole night out money thing in the first place, one more case of the blue chips [zb]ing the job up for everyone else!

Much as it hurts me not to have a go at ESL but…

The rates for meal allowances that can be paid, are approved by HMRC. My memory may be poor, and Google may correct me but, I think it used to be £5 for one meal, £10 for a longer day up to a maximum of £15 for longer shifts.

Like I said, I may (more than likely) be wrong, but I am sure that is the thinking behind the rates…

Double post :unamused:

Surely buying ingredients for in-cab cooking is just the same as buying ingredients for at-home cooking? From HMRC’s POV, they want to see evidence that the nighting-out driver is incurring additional expense over and above what he would have to pay if going home at night- e.g. by being obliged to purchase cooked meals (i.e. that someone else has cooked for them), paying for shower/washing facilities etc.

Night out money is not tax-able, you have to sign to say you’ve received the payment, and were you were.

11/11/17. Colsterworth. £25.00 john smith
12/11/17. Penrith £255.00 bill Sykes. Then signed

Basically you sign for the money to say YOU have received a cash payment, and its below the taxable threshold.

Any company that want you to provide receipts for proof, are claiming the vat back.

It’s all so the money is tracable by hmrc, to stop company’s losing cash, larger company whould rather it was just put in your wages, as its a headache to do it properly,

Brilliant , the brother inlaw who works for the same company at the same depot as the op was only telling me how he was earning £££&£&£££££ the other week , and now we’ve got one of there drivers roaring there eyes out over a few £ per week  .

Wind yer neck in Dozy, I was seeking clarification not roaring my eyes out. If I’m out 4 nights a week then I buy cooked meals to cover that, the only difference is that now when they ask if I want a receipt I’ll reply yes as opposed to no. There in a nutshell is the only thing that this will change for me.

If you were previously getting paid for those cooked meals no questions asked, then you will need receipts. If not there is no change.

This rule was to stop drivers receiving a Tax free payment they were never entitled to.

Maoster, I think your people have not read the rules correctly. This has been in place since April.
