Hi all from Newbie

See what I’ve started with all this talk about gears lol. There wasn’t a switch to change in to higher gears on the truck I was in just when in nuetral move the stick to the left or right for high and when you hear the clunk you’ve got it.

I have a ton of books and the dvd’s cd rom. I just can’t find much in the way of studying for the case study. The cpc book I have doesn’t seem to have a lot of expamples as such.

I will keep everyone posted and hopefully I’ll be out and about driving trucks soon.

also invest in the HPT dvd (£20) for all vheicles and a book cant remember what its called but from wh smiths £16.99  i did and it paid off also on the direct gov web site there is a hpt free practice vid

and all i can say is welcome to the shack of all these wonderful folk and good luck on your test n lessons, please keep us posted

Peter Smythe:

If you only had one switch/lever on the stick then you were using a straightforward range change box which doesn’t split any gears but moves from low range 1-2-3-4 to high range 1-2-3-4 typically.

Not necessarily. You can have one switch on the stick and that could be either a range change or a splitter. Jennie is describing a splitter.

As a newbie on an assessment I’d bet a weeks wages she was not using a splitter but a range change! I think you have managed to confuse quite a few people now. I did say there are different splitters available but as newbies they wouldn’t be exposed to them whilst training and unlikely to meet them after they pass. That’s why I didn’t expand on them.

Somehow I missed this post of yours when I was writing my last one! You were using a “slapover” gearbox which is a range change box. If you’re assessor called this box a splitter then she is incorrect and I would be a little concerned about her depth of knowledge.

Hi Everyone

Newbie here just introducing myself. I have been a dental nurse for the past five years and am fed up of looking at the same four walls everyday so I have taken the steps to obtain my dream of being a truck driver. Have had my assesment drive at GTG in Glasgow. I was advised 7 days training but will go for 8 just to be sure. My instructer says I came across a wee bit hesitant as I wasn’t expecting to be out in the main road right away. I was worried about using the splitter gearbox but my instructor said I seemed to pick it up quite quickly, just need to concentrate on my road positioning and checking the mirrors. My theories are booked for the end of May and I’m looking to start my training in October. Only time I can get holidays from work, and I cannot wait to get started.

Welcome but you’re wasting your time. Salaries that dental nurses get paid is in a completely different league to that of a trucker. Also, there are no trucking atm due to recession so I hope you’re only planning to do trucking as a part time venture. Suggest you have a good read of the newbie forum to see the stories from other newbies that are still looking for work years after passing their test. :bulb:

@ Rob

Dental Nurses pay isn’t that great unless you live in London and work for a private practice. I haven’t been enjoying my work for a long time, and I prefer being out and about (used to be a carer so was driving around a lot), which is why I want to be a truck driver, not wanting to do it for the money but to have a bit more freedom as it were and expericene new places every day. I know the jobs front isn’t great just now and I would be expecting at having to start with some agency work doing 7.5 tonne to get the experience. Ideally I would want to start out part time before giving up a full time job until I’ve found something permanment. I won’t give up trying though. Trucking is something I’ve always wanted to do afterall.

my wife is a dental nurse but currently works for an insurance company because dental nurse wages are poor, i can understand why you want to get out and about in a truck though so good luck.
as for the gear change i have no idea as i drive an actros

Don’t know where that comment comes from as I’ve already explained that a splitter (in the proper sense of the word) is accepted for training/test. There is no need to have a range change if a splitter is in place. Out of interest, the splitter doesn’t even have to be used on test - - but I didn’t make the rules!

Reading the thread, it transpires that this lady had no switch at all as it was a slapover - which I also explained.

Good luck all

I’d suggest you re-read the original post then Peter!

Hint: Nobody was talking about what gearboxes were permitted.

I was worried about using the splitter gearbox

This was part of the OP.

Correct terminology is important to avoid confusion! What you describe is a range change box which can have a split button as well but would be unusual in a training vehicle. For future reference if there’s one button/switch on the stick then it is a range change. If there’s two then it will be a range change with a split switch. You can ignore the split switch when training with an empty vehicle. There is another kind of splitter box but you won’t experience that as a trainee and very unlikely even when you pass. I suggest you clarify things with your assessor if you go back there. There are links to recommended training schools on this site too which might help you.

She did use that term yeah, all I know is that 1-4 were the lower and 5-8, the upper.

I was merely pointing out that it could have been a splitter! (Which, of course, would mean only 1 switch on the stick). Don’t know what the problem is with that. It’s wrong to assume that training vehicles are all range change when there are some that are splitters. That’s all I said.

Have a great, sunny day

Well thank you for muddying the water, I hope your trainees find you less confusing! You have a nice day   :grimacing:  :unamused:

Waters not muddy and no trainee confused to date
