Hgv test - emergency stop

the time i passed my test, i had to do the brake exercise twice…first time didn’t go fast enough!
you need to be going about 20 mph, but when you are driving towards the “cones” it feels alot faster…

Good luck with the test.

Going slightly off topic but

When I did my PCV some 7 years ago, the excercise was taken out on the road and not in the test centre. When it came to the stop, the road was so wet and greasy the back of the coach locked up and started to slide to the offside. My reaction was to ease off the brake and steer into the skid.

The examiner actually passed me on that and decided that the conditions were too dangerous for the next candidate to do that particular test.

At the debrief I did query it because I had skidded and the reply was “you controlled the skid safely” :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

however with the new rules coming in saying all training vehicles must have ABS then that situation should not occur anymore

That’s unbelievable (I don’t mean I don’t believe you though)!! Let alone the fact that it is against ‘procedure’, what if you were a candidate who couldn’t stop the vehicle quickly (and safely) and then a legitimate/real situation occured that needed quick & controlled braking??!!

Which should’ve been acceptable … but on the manoeuvreing area where there would be no danger to Joe Public.

He probably didn’t dare to fail you in case his lack of professionalism came to light. I take it you did the reverse exercise on the manoeuvreing area - and if so, why didn’t he do the braking exercise while he was there■■?

Right answer, wrong place!

ABS doesn’t guarentee no skidding will occur, however the vehicle can still be streered safely under heavy braking.

The reversing excercise when I did the PCV was similar to the car one, i.e. reverse around a corner on an industrial estate.

The test was taken by an approved examiner who also worked for the bus company. I didn’t actually go to a test station. the test started and ended at the bus station!!!
