Hgv Sat Nav

Nom…

Nom nom.

Have a look at the Dobcross village thread on this forum, see if you can contact the driver and find out what sat nav he was using. Should do the job for you

Juddian:
As above, go old school a bit (common sense, plan route by bridge height map) and new tech a bit, let a common or garden satnav help you with looking for turnings and which road to take from an unsigned roundabout say.

Last time i used the fitted satnav was to a place out in the wilds of the fens, instead of following my own above advice i simply punched in the postcode and let it lead me from about 5 miles out.
Boy oh boy, it took me down single track twisting blind lanes with typical fen ditches either side, had i met another lorry we’d have had a serious problem, lots of lorries go this way no doubt following satnav cos the corners were all scrubbed down due to tyre wear.

Whilst tipping i got me trusty map out, and realised by travelling some 1 mile further i simply had to turn right out of the yard, travel about 2 miles on a decent B road to a cross roads, then turn left along an equally straightish fen road back to the main road, easy peasy.

You do not need a lorry sprecific satnav, you need a decent bridge height map, i prefer AA truckers atlas which is clearer to read than Philips, and a reasoanable satnav or google maps on your phone, google maps is brilliant for the live traffic, but Garmins Digi Traffic (must be digitraffic) runs it a close second place, plus you can let the satnav run 24/7 at no cost in data.
Satnavs are brilliant pocket sized street maps of the country, and a good way of confirming you are on the right road, good for spotting unmarked turnings in the dark, speed limits, camera sites etc.

A pro lorry driver should never allow a satnav to plan their route, that is your job via a map because it’s you not the bloody 'puter who is in charge of and responsible for the wagon, by all means program a reasonably priced satnav and confirm its looking at the same route and let it assit you along the way, for that purpose they are brilliant devices, but do not put your trust the bloody thing.

My sat nav did something similar, tried (and I say tried because one look at the road and there was no ■■■■■■ way I’m taking a lorry down there) to take me down inappropriate roads. I changed the route preference from “shortest route” to “fastest route”. It seems to keep me on bigger roads for as long as possible, pretty much what I plan on the atlas really.

Nothing so simple as shortest route rookie mistake, the satnav i trusted just the once and it proved itself beyond all doubt to be unworthy of such faith.

reclines seat to the sound of munchity crunchity and spitting out the hard bits, whos next to repost the same predictable pish they post with every single “what sat nav posting”,

they keep posting the same bloody questions every sodding week, so short of hurling insults at the sods for not doing a search and reading the hours of threads already devoted to bloody pratnavs, what pray are we post apart from our own usual predictable pish :smiling_imp:

my own pish is intended to let them know there is an alternative to being a steering wheel attendee reliant on what the bloody toy map tells 'em to do, if even 1 bugger takes notice and becomes an independent minded lorry driver instead of a hivis’d robot i’ll be content with that :sunglasses:

^^ yes it’s getting a bit tiring same questions ,really if you need to put your lorry dimensions in a prat nav may be your in the wrong job.

■■■■ me, even the ■■■■■■■ TomToms that everyone here loves to dismiss don’t offer the option of “shortest” routes when routing for a lorry!

the same ones that havent got the gumption to search for a satnav topic are most likely the ones that tend to follow it blindly like bogdan meets the war memorial.
you would think they could put up a sticky/announcement/or whatever so that the satnav question needs 1 reply…i.e.look at the stickie.
i know they can be ignored on here but every week its whats the best satnav, followed by what should i take on a night out…ps…i also like spouting pish… :smiling_imp:

Thankyou very much for the people that posted advice, greatly appreciated

To the facetious bellends who seem intent on voicing opinions they have apparently been posting for years;

I posted this question in the newbie section because I am exactly that.

Yes I will and can use a map.

Yes I have common sense.

I want a Sat Nav as well, get a grip :unamused:

ok a bridge map?? App? actual paper map? website??

Perhaps you need a satnav to find the newbie section as this ain’t it

Ha! Wonder why it was moved? It’s still on there as well as here :open_mouth:

I have a Snooper Truckmate for five years. I update the speed camera data base (paid for) and the maps. They have sent me a new SD card when the map update was huge.

I’ve looked to replace it but it does seem to be mostly intelligent. A couple of quirks … tried to direct me under a stupid bridge up at J9/J10 M42. Going to M1, it seems to want me to get off on the A1 sliproad, then rejoin the motorway.

The traffic is ok but I tend to look at Waze (free phone app) for that. The TMC relies on HA telling them about it and often they don’t; Waze being customer-reported tends to be quicker.

It’s probably not the easiest for re-routing so check if the newer ones still require keypresses. I know one of the other drivers has a truck nav that’s all voice activated.

I carry a bridge height map but frankly the only thing I trust is my eyes when it comes to it. Not trailer/bridge heights.
