Brisbane’s of Knighton had a few of those Austin’s,they hired them to Radnoshire County Council. Passey Nott had about three of them long wheelbase version as well. I drove a 1964 model for a couple of days on Brisbane’s when the regular driver was off ill,no heater or indicaters, they were extras in those days, they still ran them into the 70’s.
Cheers Dave.

Good picture that one Magic, the only John Mathews i can remember finished up with a red and cream DAF 3300 unit used park it next to the railway station in Hereford before Morrisons was built going back about 25 years ago. Cant remember Danny Mathews will ask about though.MAGIC:
Does anybody remember Danny Matthews, brother of John Matthews ? Used to haul out of Sun Valley and steel out of Llanwern mainly. John also did steel and Bulmers.
Photo taken after delivering to G.L. Baker at Faversham (Marks & Spencers) at Farthing Corner Services on the M2.
Thanks Finny. I used to drive for Danny back in the seventies. He had the Atki in the photo, a ‘Mickey Mouse’ Foden and an ERF (seen in the other photo at the Forth bridge ) They all had ‘governors’ motors in them then, i.e. 180 Gardners. We used to do mainly Sun Valley work with the fridges as well as steel and general haulage with flats. I’m not sure where his brother John had his yard, but I recall that he bought the DAF and a Seddon Atki new both around the same time and I think it was Fred Tilby who sprayed them for him in his colours and the first day out one of the nearside front wheels fell off one of them! Never did find out who was to blame.
Hi Magic
The ol chap can remember both Mathews runnin out of Hereford ,the last i heard of Fred Tilby he was on the spanners at TW Jones not so long ago

Hi Finnly, I wonder if your ol’ chap can remember some other Hereford hauliers from days gone by that haven’t been mentioned before.
H.C. Sadler of Pembridge, Richard Thomas & Baldwins (RTB), Goldings (Fuel), Patricks of Canon Pyon, Baldrys of Orcop, Gerald Brittain, Brinley & Colin Bowen (Pembridge), Ron Evans (St Weonards), Lawson Law (Caravan Transport), Freddy Brace, ■■■■ Bushnell, Tom Skyrme, & Reg Lewis.
Bert Sadler was a great bloke to work for and gave me my first job after gaining my class 2 licence back in the early seventies. Some of the drivers on this forum might remember Curtis Davies who also used to drive for Sadlers, one of lifes characters was Curtis, he ended up driving for Burgoynes before sadly passing away a few years back.
Cheers for now, Magic.

Hi Dave
Thanks for your reply. Curtis used to be on for Passey Notts years ago. We used to nip up to the cafe in Kington just below the square when we were on ‘yard’ duties at Sadlers. He was a great workmate, had many a laugh with him.
I knew I had left one of the Bowen brothers out (Clive). Freddie Brace I think owned Hereford Resurfacing and worked on the new ring road in Hereford and I think he was involved in demolishing the old Kemble Theatre as well.
Yes, we might know one another. Thats me in front of the blue & yellow Scania of Hereford Transport on the Williams Bros thread. I have a few other lorry photo’s that I must get round to putting on.
Cheers for now, Magic.

Hi Magic,
Freddie had left Hereford Resurfacing before the ring road was built,he had two eight wheelers in the Gore, one AEC which he sold to Doug Dawe and a Foden two stroke. When he sold the AEC to Doug,he bought a second Foden two stroke which he drove himself, with Derek Bounds. Fred Crompton from Madley also had an eight wheeler in the Gore at one time.
My dad drove for Passey Nott for over forty years and worked with Curtis.
Cheers Dave.
Not quite a Hereford Haulier, another farm shunter pictured in South Molton whilst delivering.
