Come on you Hereford drivers, this thread had slipped off the front page, got to keep the area in the mix.
Cheers Dave.
Some of you must have driven Guy Big Js with 8LXBs but I suppose all the good Hauliers came out of the Forrest of Dean !! Bew-Big J-ick
Careful Dennis,
A lot of Bedfords around Hereford,as they had Vincent Greenhouse a main dealer,Arthur Oakley ran TM’s also M C Wilson, but there were Atki’s ERF’S and allsorts, can’t remember anybody running Guy big J’s,possibly some of the Hereford members will. Bulmers ran good kit F88’s and Robinson’s ran some nice moters, there are quite a few small operators around Hereford running some top of the range moters these days.
Cheers Dave.

I drove a few of them Dennis, cheap moters, but they did the job. The thing is,in Mid Walles in those days, there wasn’t a dealer for miles, also most of the work was medium distance, people like Roberts of Knighton ran Atki’s on distance work,Praills from Hereford were an agent for them, otherwise you had to go to Bevans at Swansea. Nowadays most of the truck makers have a dealer in Hereford, with a Scania dealer in Knighton up this way. You chaps in Milnthorpe didn’t know you were born.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya Dave our Scany& Volvo dealers were 50 miles away in Carlisle ! we used to send a day shifter in every afternoon to collect parts but on a Saturday I usually shot up in the car early if something was wanted PDQ I have flown down Shap on the M6 clocking well over the ton ( 135mph was the record ) I know I know I should have been locked up but the road was clear — pedal to the metal !! The main benefit we had at Milnthorpe was the depot being adjacent to the MOT test centre in fact we owned the road into the station but apart from knowing all the big bosses at the DOT in Bristol we never ( contrary to popular opinion) got any special favours infact quite the opposite the Bolshy left wing testers delighted in occaisionally knocking one of ours off !! they even gave us a GV9 once and the tractor had never been on the road in our ownership and it was on private land back into our workshops but the ■■■■■■■■ would have none of it !! But I used to get stuck into them from time to time about the cowboys the did pass thro’.! I even used to take one of my harness horses into the centre at lunch time to graze the sweet grass !! One chap who was waiting for a test aked me what I was doing one day and I told him I was waiting for a brake test !! the testers thought it was bloody hilarious when this guy asked them how they were going to get the horse onto the brake rollers !! Happy Days Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
Can’t think of any firms in this or the Hereford area that had as many moters as yours. The likes of Bulmers and Sun Valley did,but none on general haulage. Roberts of Knighton ran about 80 at one time,Oakleys ran quite a few. Lloyds of Ludlow and Swains had biggish fleets.Mervyn Thomas has probably got the biggest general haulage fleet, with about 60 lorries nowadays in this area. The thing with this area we are too far from the moterway network, whereas you are quite close to the M6,A lot of outfits relocated to depots nearer the moterway, also the likes of wincanton and exel have come in and taken the contracts with Bulmers and Sun Valley, also the demise of the steel industry finished a lot of hauliers this way,but thats the way everwhere,we will all have to buy Bedford J types and run them in India.
Cheers Dave.

Only if had an 8LXB engine !! ■■■■ Turpin!!
Their were a few rigid Guy Big J’s around Herefordshire. I remember Garnon’s estate having a six wheeler bulk tipper with fold down sides, which they also put a hay and straw extension on the back. There were a few others, but its a long time ago.
Cheers Dave.
I know they are not a haulier but GB Liners the removal company must have been running out of Holmer Road, Hereford for a fair few years? Anybody had any experience of them?
Hi jdc,
Not had any experience of using them, but as you say they have been around for many years, and all of us who contribute to this thread have overlooked them. I think they have about six operating centre’s in different parts now.
Cheers Dave.
I used to work for them in Cheltenham but used to spend a lot of time in Hereford. I think they are now up to 10 depots around the country and wondered whether any contributors to this thread had ever worked for them?
Hi jdc,
Just had a look on the Vosa website,as you say at least ten operating centre’s.I should think someone on here must have worked for them.I would think its quite a good job working for a specialist removal firm like them. Ive got to admit I don’t know much about that side of the haulage business.
Cheers Dave.
Hi Dave Jdc
Happen to know a couple of lads from Hereford depot, Stu Bailey he’s agood lad fitter for them and Andy Merredith use to alot of continental work for them and not sure if Roger Watkins went there from Picfords , they’ve got 52 plate motors that look like brand new kit 's always smart
Cheers Fin

Hi Fin,
Stu Bailey, what a cracking bloke always had a laugh with him and if you ever had a problem he would always make time to help you, more than the other fitter there. I only knew Andy for a short period of time before he left to do bricklaying I think, but again, he was always nice and friendly and made a cracking cuppa!! Last time I saw Stu he had shaved off his mammoth beard and looked completely different. If you see either of them would you please pass on my regards (Jamie Cooper)
