Henry smithers soton depot

Great to see these pictures real trip down memory lane, my father Fred Peach drove for Henry Smithers and i would do drivers mates jobs during the summer holidays it was well paid i remember and i was paid daily in cash. I remember some of the old drivers names here and worked with some of them, one driver not on here was Kenny Poole he was a good friend to my dad and we often went sea fishing together, he was always a joker sadly died young from cancer.

I worked for Henry Smithers in Soton about 73 ish.
Frenchy you mentioned is Robin Pike ( brother of John ) who now resides in France.
If you go way back on the Soton thread you will find a photo of me and Robin sat
in our Big J,s.

thanks for the info,i left henry smithers mid 73 and went to sillcock and collings,i think you must have joined after that because i dont remember your names,i was based in a small office in the back of lex tillotson redbridge, they were building the new yard at the time,a year after i left denny dixon who was a shop steward at smithers came to work at sillcocks,i had a good time there with some good mates, bill, parker, terry white, and lots more, sadly denny dixon died and i hear a few more as well,i have only just joined truck net its a good site,i am still trying to find my way around it,my name is ken carey, thanks for replying.

I was sat last night with my father in law Bill Parker showing him what the Internet was all about and came across this website whilst looking up Henry Smithers as we were showing him pictures of old trucks / where he used to work. He was amazed, so if there is still anyone out there who knows Bill Parker, he is still about and living in Sholing. He was so happy looking at the pictures that had been uploaded and we may have even persuaded him to get a lap top??

Bill Parker am I right in thinking as a young man you worked for Harrison Diaries and used to race back to the depot with horse and cart full of empty milk bottles after your deliveries. Later worked for Reeves transport driving Foden eight wheelers salt wagons on trunk to Membury rubber then change over Warick with the Manchester lads if your man would like to catch up some time Best Regards one old timer to another
