On a kinda related note, what amazes me is when you see people pulling car transporter trailers with a car on, on the back of a car. ie a ford mondeo, pulling a trailer with another ford mondeo on the back. Even if the driver has a B+E they would still surely be over the combination weight limit and axle weight limit for the car.
To add tuppence worth the drivewr of a bendy, articulated bus does not need to have a D PLUS E as it does not come apart. Mad or what.
Are we having bets on how many bus garage mechanics have in the past or are now recovering on a D only?
Tofer, not sure about combination weight, this is something nobody ever used to bother about years ago. However, doesn’t necessarily mean over loaded on the rear axle, as if the transporter trailer is a tandem axle (and they usually are) the nose weight can be adjusted (even to the point of being negative) by where you position the car on the trailer.
I’d like us to look more (Rog?) at the legalities here as i used to regularly move cars this way. Once grossing in excess of 4 tonnes
with tow car (Sierra diesel estate) + trailer + scrap car + other scrap.

The reason you don’t need a D+E to drive a bendy bus is because the engine is at the rear, therefore it’s not a trailer. If the engine was in the front then you’d need a D+E…lets face it, if you wanted to make it come apart then it would
On a similar vein. In my local last night there was a guy in who is a collection and delivery driver for a job.Hes got a C+E 102 entitlment. This morning hes picking up an unregistered bus from DAF,taking it to Southhampton. Now I said you cant drive that unless you have a D entitlement but he was adamant as its not registered and might not even have its COIF certificate its okay to drive.I,m sceptical though,as it is still a bus.

Hope this helps - Towing trailers or caravans with vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes
I would reckon he would be O.K. as there are no passengers involved ,paying or other wise. There are no jobs anyway but could I be a shunter as I would be reversing all the time the engine would be in the rear. What about the drivers withGroup 4 or Reliance carting prisoners around some of them have cells rather than seats and drive on a C licence.I.M.O. it should be a D licence.as the guests of H.M. are still people.

From DVLA - Tel. 01792 782 341
Unregistered means that using trade plates is a must.
Licence required is a ‘D’ if over 17 seats or D1 if 8 to 17 seats.
You used to able to drive large buses, not for hire or reward, on a cat B.
DVLA sneakily lost that off my license many years ago & i didn’t notice it straight away. When i wrote to them, they oh so kindly sent me medical & test application forms!
Looking at that link Rog, it seems that to drive my outfit i need to drive it on my C + E license. The total weight of everything should be within the MAM of the car. The trailer + load should be within the the MAM of the trailer. (what’s that? I think the trailer was built in the 70’s!)
I’ve had Jags, Land Rovers, ■■■■■■ vans on it, but then usually pulled by a Land Rover or ocassionally a Granada.
If within the above parameters the total MAM (is that train wight?) exceeds 3.5 tonne, if i were to be carrying for hire & reward (I’m not) then i’m guessing it would become tachographable? (except in the case of being pulled by a Land Rover which is classed as a multi purpose vehicele & different rules apply?)

Yes, although AIUI you don’t get an exemption on the Land Rover as regards tacho rules.
My advice would be to contact DVLA before towing with a combination where you were unsure of what regulations applied and ask them for the definitives in regard to licence and legality of the combination.
Holders of a full category D (PCV) driving licence can also drive a passenger carrying recovery vehicle. This is defined as a vehicle (not being an articulated goods vehicle combination) which:
has an unladen weight not exceeding 10.2 tonnes
is being operated by the holder of a public service vehicle (PSV) operator’s licence and, is being used for the purpose of:
i. proceeding to, or returning from, a place where assistance is to be, or has been, given to a damaged or disabled passenger-carrying vehicle
ii. giving assistance to or moving a disabled passenger-carrying vehicle or moving a damaged vehicle
Nothing personal BUT, I think you all should get out more…
Have a great bank holiday weekend everyone …

Is right Joe, i’m heading off to the old timers forum where you normally go. I’m with you !!!
So if I was to consider going into the car transporting business I may as well just get a 7.5tonne beavertail recovery wagon then and drive it on my C.
