"Heavy Haulage through the years"

Ballast Tractors were used in 50/60’s because taxation was based on unladen weight so an artic had to include the trailer where as ballasted locomotive did not also it was allowed to be weighed without ballast
Also they were restricted to 12mph when laden and at that time 20ton per axle

Who’s a naughty boy then. From the latest edition of Transport News.

"James Campbell, a director of West of Scotland Heavy Haulage Limited out of Cumbernauld, has been jailed for 16 months over a £110,000 fraud that involved police escort contracts.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of fraud for altering paperwork for services provided to the firm by police in Scotland and Wales and overcharged a Spanish company by £110,000 for the transportation of wind turbine parts.

It was also confirmed that James Campbell will now be the subject of confiscation action under proceeds of crime legislation to recover monies fraudulently obtained.

The business was founded in 1946 and had contracts in the renewable, mining, civil engineering and construction sectors before it ceased trading in 2017 with the loss of 21 jobs."

That was the case but the firm restarted and is still going, I snapped this photo at North Kessock layby on the A9 at Inverness Nov 2024.
There was a bit on Trucknet about it back when it folded, must have a look.

Yep here it is. West of Scotland heavy Haulage ltd

I knew they had went into liquidation and then phoenixed themselves as I passed one on the M6 last week. I assumed the liquidation was down to tax, vat etc problems. Didn’t realise it was a fraud case.

I sometimes see what looks like ex- West of Scotland units, with a different name on the cab. Not sure if these trucks were bought second-hand?

This ex- v.d. Vlist unit was spotted in Sierra Leone, still earning it’s keep!

This valuable trailer (click twice on the picture) was stolen in the States but the miscreant was known and his location detected. The owner, a forum member there and owner driver who had several trailers, all for heavy haulage, put out a plea.

Another driver who is based in the area enlisted friends back home to find it and ‘steal’ it back. It is safely on its way back from West Virginia to, I think, California.
A heartwarming story of cooperation between friends and colleagues. Would it happen here, or in UK?

Great that they found it back!
Sometimes trailers get stolen in Holland (usually curtain siders or box trailers) and usually there’s a plea to keep an eye out on social media. 9 out of 10 times that works apparently, so there are some good points regarding using social media.
