"Heavy Haulage through the years"

Spardo:
Took no less than 4 hours to get those last 2 pictures on my screen, what is going on here, is it me? I don’t think so because others have complained and I have no problems elsewhere. . Does anyone know?

Anyway, well worth it in the end, and a question for Bewick, has the law changed in England then, when I was a lad you had to be 21 to drive an HGV, never mind one of those?

They changed it to 18 a few years back. Madness if you ask me.

I understand the young Driver scheme was brought in a few years ago and it was quite a strict course as once the required standard and pass was achieved they only had to blink to blot their copy book then it was “curtains” they lose their licence. I appreciate that some may disagree and probably have good reason to question the logic but I can say that I employed a number of youngsters at Bewick Transport over the years and provided they were prepared to be taught properly they invariably turned out to be very decent drivers. With regard to 18 year old Tommy Ponsonby I can say without fear or favour that this Lad is comfortably operating way beyond his tender years and is proving to be a top HH Driver. He can turn his hand to any task required of him and can load and unload with ease any of the most expensive machinery hauled by MA Ponsonby Ltd. and he also holds a ticket to use the MAP crane trailer when required although this is not a job he particularly looks forward to but never the less takes it in his stride as and when required. Tommy fully understands that he has got to be very mindful of the stringent requirements that are imposed on young HGV Drivers and one slip so to speak and he would be back on one of the ■■■■■■ vans ! :frowning: Not much danger of that happening I might add !
I have no need to BS I’m too old for that as a spade is a shovel to me and Tommy P as far as I am concerned must be the top Class 1 HH Driver in the UK today ! Maybe it is because his training started when he was 6 or 7 years old ! Cheers Bewick.

Now you mention it, I do remember when I took over as manager at Courtaulds there was a lad driving who had been though that scheme at Plessy’s in Beeston, Nottingham.

Not sure if I agree with it or not, although as Bewick says, the course was strict and the retribution for infringements likewise. All I know is that I was perfectly capable at that age being the only one in my extensive group of motorcyclists who had never fallen off or had even a minor accident. In fact I never even bothered to learn and take a car test until I was 21 and, on the day I passed, went straight out and started on a lorry job the same afternoon.

Sorry double post.

Tommy P ready to depart the depot with not one but two machines on board ! Bewick.

Not many Lads in the UK aged 18 will be sat behind the wheel of a similar outfit such as this today ! :sunglasses:

I think you’ve got the old and new money mixed up there a bit, 66ft long seems more likely. Either that, or you should consider making an appointment with SpecSavers nearest to you…

As others have said on a different thread, it’s been going on for a while, although it seems better now again? I don’t know a how these systems work but it looks like it had some sort of update/reboot?

Going back to the early days of the logging industry.

A big shout out once again to everyone that contributed to this thread, much appreciated.

That Nooteboom low loader that’s pulled by J26 Trucking was owned by Mammoet Road Cargo before Oily, when J26 bought it, they completely stripped it and replaced just about every part on it, certainly looked much better after that!
