"Heavy Haulage through the years"

A big shout out to Buzzer and Mr. Dunbar and DIG, Spardo and Star down Under for the craic and for keeping the thread going, cheers!

This might well be the oldest lowloader I’ve ever seen.

Another from the turn of the century.

Titan drawbar trailer.

The idea of using a jeep dolly isn’t entirely new…

Another one for Spardo to work out the axle weights

Tut tut David, that “shed” is the mighty Scammell 100 tonner! Only two were built, one of those was up for sale at a auction not that long ago. Originally powered by a petrol engine, they soon found out that a Gardner was more economical to use.

How they distributed the weight over the axles beats me, but 100t ( and more sometimes)on just 4 axles… you do the math

I think it was the late Pete Sunters that said that the road network was designed to cope with 44t per axle.

Things have certainly changed over the years, but it all can be traced back to those Scammell 100 tonners.

Sorry, sorry, didn’t mean to be disrespectful, but it did remind me of a very early Kurt Johanssen Diamond T road train, just after the war. About 7 trailers I think and it was said that he set it in motion (don’t know if he had a second driver or not) and had time every now and then to walk right round the whole thing banging all the tyres, without breaking a sweat.

Aha, that one’s easy, the bloke standing underthe goose neck is bearing half the weight on his head.

The Lemand ERF artic was ‘snapped’ on the A6 Dale Road, Matlock. Many folk I know had a spell with them and Shand’s.

Goodness me, that must have been quite a shock for her.

I reckon that is the turning (behind the camera) where I used to go to load asphalt blocks. Is the ERF about to sweep right over the river?

Yes and yes! You can’t turn left as it’s now a dead end and you can’t turn right over the river as it’s one way now. However the by-pass is being closed soon for river bank repairs and the bridge will be two way again while the work is in progress. The bank has also been long closed, like most in Matlock.

Pete.

Thank you. A by-pass eh? There’s modern.
