An interesting video indeed, but a couple of points that spring to mind. A good job those were not intended for local use with multi drops, with that handbrake lever to clamber over each time, but the seats do look comfy from what I can see.

Also, the driver was very lucky to keep his windscreen intact, with that camera car racing along the shoulder and no doubt kicking up the stones.

When I was there there was a belief amongst drivers that shattered screens were caused by vibration from a hit and that minimising that would preserve screens longer. When passing an oncoming vehicle first thing to do was take to the dirt and give him the clean bitumen, and the stones. The 2nd thing was to press the spread fingers of the left hand against the screen.

Is there any evidence it worked Dig, and do drivers still do it on such roads?

Your a hard man to please David I reckon those old Rotinoffs would have been a lot more comfortable than those old camel back suspension B model Macks you used to roar around in LOL

The Northern Territory boys developed a method of passing other road trains travelling in opposite directions which was scary when first experienced,I was fortunate on my first trip to Darwin when most of the sealed road was single [an original beef road] lane that i met up with a couple of Buntine men prior to crossing the border and they said stay on the sealed road until the last minute before dropping off the oncoming truck will do the same so you both have a wheel in the winro this enabled the the cabs to be past the the other truck before the majority of rocks started bouncing about.
It worked but the KW and the Titan I owned were fitted with screen guards not totally fool proof but certainly minimised the the problem .
Following a vehicle like in the clip is a different story the old grey nomad was always a problem in my day as they have the caravan in tow and often travelled a lot slower than the trucks {Thats me nowadays} I found calling them on the CB as most have one and telling them keep doing your thing don’t worry about me when we get to a section of road where I can pass pull right off and I will stay on the sealed road that way neither of us get splattered, didn’t always work if they didn’t have a radio it was ■■■■ it and see.
I may add though the single lane roads are pretty well gone now the NT have in my opinion the best roads in OZ.

Cheers Dig

An old grey nomad, is that what I have become too Dig? I like it, might translate it into French and put it on the back of the Teardrop. Une vielle nomade grise. :unamused:

Like the look of that highway though, a big improvement on yesteryear.

Here are a couple of photos I took at Derek Parnaby’s Auction at Whitworth Hall, Spennymoor, when he was selling his collection of wagons and tractors.

The Rotinoff was an impressive beast!

You have opened a Pandoras box this time DeanO or at least my Pandoras.
When I arrived in Western Aus in 1969 I worked for British Leylands West Australian Truck Division and while I was there 2 Scammell Contractor 8 leggers were built for Western Mining ,these were fitted with ■■■■■■■ engine against AEC engines built for Rhodes which were assembled in Adelaide.
A couple of years later I went to live in Derby and I did 2 seasons driving a cattle train working for Brooking Springs Station managed by Cameron Bell and his brother Doug they are the sons of Rab Bell of Bell brothers fame and Cameron is the author of the article about the Rhodes Ridley the Contractors and the Birdsville Mailman and the Rotinoffs.
I went to the show in which the restored Rhodes Ridley was unveiled in 2001 I think.
Thank again i don’t know how you do it but keep on doing it.

The Leyland Beaver owned by mailman legend Tom Kruze featured in the movie Back of Beyond is on DVD which I have a copy.
The KW below is the truck I drove for 2 years carting Cattle.
Cheers Dig

To all concerned, some fantastic stuff there gents, much appreciated :sunglasses:

It would be great if someone would save one of those Scammells, although looking at the state they’re in, a lot of money is necessary no doubt…

Now, did someone mention Scammell’s…?

Quick update for those that give a you know what about my efforts to earn a living.

Started the month in Tacoma WA, loaded a Hyster forklift for Edmonton, ran with flysheet from this here forum. The Pete just edged the Volvo on fuel and was much faster over the mountains, both up and down the hills thanks to the superior engine braking from the Jakes.

From there I picked up a part load of fire hydrants to pay for the diesel to get home. Had a few days off and then loaded a quad track for Fargo ND, then down to Davenport IA for a loading shovel with a mahoosive bucket, this went to Regina SK.

Next mission was a big transformer for Seattle WA with a reload out of Tacoma, a D8 CAT for Regina SK and then home empty for a weekend of insulating my garage.

Here’s the pics.
