"Heavy Haulage through the years"

EDTRUCK:
The Crouch Crusader is ex Pickfords - I remember that wa one of the first trucks I ever drove!!

Buzzer:
Here are a couple of heavy haulers, cheers Buzzer

Cheers Buzzer

And what a coincidence eh Ed! How was it to work with?

Spotted this one earlier this week at the Dutch/German border.

Spotted these last week at the border in Venlo.

newmercman:
I’ll agree with you on the Magnum, a very nice lorry to drive, such good vision both forwards and through the mirrors and thanks to the long wheelbase they rode very well, you could throw one around much more than you would think possible looking at one.

The Viewline though, not a chance, I’ve never driven one (thankfully) but if they drive the way they look they must be truly horrible.

I owned one for 19 years, and I can tell you that it drove absolutely beautifully! Power steering, cab suspension, loads of room inside, and only ever had one unpleasantly hot day

pv83:
Those Viewline’s were way ahead of their time, even by today standards they look… erm… a wee bit different, shall we say… How many survived? As there are enough Borderers on the rally scene, I’ve never seen a Viewline before making it’s appearance on said scene.

I’m not sure about the weight problems, as it would weigh about the same as the other usual suspects at the time?

There are only a handful of survivors, unfortunately, of different types. Its problem wasn’t one of weight, but of cost: for a period in 1968/9, it was listed as the standard cab on the 6x4 tractor, but you could have a Mk.2 cab instead for a discount of £150. The dual passenger seat (a bench) made it of interest for heavy haulage operators, and also for RTITB, who took several, and who believed in having two trainees at once.

Some of the survivors:

The clue here is that the front axle position doesn’t line up with the wheel arches on the Mk.2 cab

I’m just not a fan of them in general, them being British lorries of that era, with the exception of AEC, which I’m sure many will disagree on. The 400 and B series is where my interest in the others begins and my love of AEC ends, I didn’t like the BL inspired Leyland range at all. I’ve never had any practical experience of MK1 or 2 Atkinsons, and I only moved an A series across the yard, although it did have a 240 under and sticking out the back of the cab, so my opinion isn’t based upon knowledge, I just know that in 1973 the A series and MK2 would have made up the bottom two in my list of lorries I want to drive.

Saying that, I’d love to have a go in one now, just to see what all the fuss is about.

Nice looking Viewlines there, always a favourite of mine.

Seen on the A 75, heading north towards Millau.

This is less colourful, of course a Renault, but what is it carrying? Not a tank, it’s got wheels, but a really heavy looking gun.

Click as usual for the best view.

Spardo:
Can’t see why you would not like the Viewline, NMM, to me it was beyond futuristic and, as I mentioned above, with modern facilities taken for granted these days, would have been a truly great truck. 240 Gardner is the best man to tell us about Viewlines in preservation. Doesn’t Killingbeck have a sleeper version still?

Apologies, David, I never spotted this post before.

Killingbeck never operated a View-Line, although he did some mechanical work on mine when I first got it. The only sleeper-cabbed View-Line was converted by Colin Barrett:

To pick up on the Renault link:

And a bit later, I think in St. Afrique. Before this smart motor came into view round the corner ahead, his car pilot was stationary in the middle of the road so I pulled into a rather wider section thinking he must be really wide.

Then was somewhat disappointed and made a rather derogatory comment about the pilot, but then thought, perhaps he was just making sure his charge didn’t collect any lamp posts on his way through.

And he did give me a polite wave of thanks. :unamused:

I’ll deal with the third photograph first, which has taken me at least one week to research in regard to its approximate
date

Scottish Steam: A Celebration,Keith Langston,Wharncliffe,August 2014.

The same photograph - QV 1 below - is on page 98 of the above book and unfortunately there are several mistakes in
the photograph’s caption! :exclamation: :unamused: The photograph was supposedly taken in 1910,the 2-8-2 steam railway locomotive

  • ‘built to Henschel design’ for the Argentina Government is being lifted off the William Kerr Loch Ness Monster Drawbar
Lowloader Trailer and we are also informed that Clyde and Lord Roberts are ‘steam tractors’ ! :exclamation: :unamused: :unamused: :open_mouth: :imp: …the indignity and how insulting to these ROAD LOCOMOTIVES! :exclamation:  to give them their proper and correct
    name

Corrections and facts:The Burrell road locomotive,CLYDE,wasn’t around in 1910 :it was newly built in October 1912 ;the Loch Ness Monster Drawbar Lowloader Trailer was built in 1926;the date of the photograph is 1931 ;and a Indian Railways,North British Locomotive Company XD - Dominion - Mikado 2-8-2 Steam Railway Locomotive is
being lifted off the Kerr trailer at Glasgow Docks.
…Has Keith Langston made any other mistakes in this book?

Burrell Contractors-Type Special DCC C 3 10-12 NHP Heavy Haulage Steam Road Locomotive,Engine No.3419,CLYDE,October 1912,GA 7818,Glasgow,1918,LEFT.Indian Railways,North British Locomotive Company XD - Dominion - Mikado 2-8-2 Steam Railway Locomotive.1931. And,RIGHT:-
Burrell SRL DCC C 2 10 NHP Heavy Haulage Steam Road Locomotive,Engine No.1997,LORD ROBERTS,July 1897,GA 7816,
Glasgow,1918.This road locomotive was new as a Showmans Road Locomotive, named PRIDE OF NORTH WALES
operated by Arthur Wildman of Caernarvon,Wales. In 1900 this road locomotive was sold to a heavy haulage firm
in Reading, then was sold to William Kerr & Sons,Glasgow,in 1902.

William Kerr and another Glasgow-based heavy haulage firm,Road Engines Company, merged in 1932 and became
the wonderfully and evocatively named Road Engines And Kerr and continued operating Lord Roberts until 1942-1943
and Clyde until 1947.Both of these road locomotives, that had become legends in road haulage because of their
haulage feats, were iniquitously and needlessly scrapped! :exclamation: :unamused: - they ought to have been preserved! :exclamation:
Actually,Clyde disappeared into mystery: it was bought by a young showman and was last seen on the A74 road, his wife
was steering…ever since then various sightings of Clyde have been reported ,but rather like the reported
sightings of Elvis Presley, they have turned out to be rumours …perhaps it’s the ghost of Clyde…
rather like the The Flying Dutchman Ship phantom ship… :bulb:  and the London Transport Double Decker Omnibus
ghost bus… :bulb:

And now the first photograph in PV83’s post:-

Both Simplicity and Supreme were bought by Road Engines & Kerr,Glasgow,in 1940 and were converted into heavy
haulage steam road locomotives and worked as such into 1953,by which time Road Engines & Kerr had been taken over
by British Road Services - BRS in 1948 and was then absorbed into Pickfords Heavy Haulage in 1949.

Both Simplicity and Supreme eventually passed into preservation:Very unfortunately Simplicity was iniquitously and

Supreme was bought from Jack Hardwick Motor Vehicle Dealers in 1958 by Jack Wharton who restored Supreme back
into a showmans steam road locomotive, and was reckoned to be the finest example of a showmans road locomotive
After Jack Wharton passed on to Heaven - I believe in the Afterlife - Supreme was exhibited at the National Motor
Museum for some time, then it returned to the care of the Wharton Family and the steam and vintage vehicle rally
circuit. The Wharton’s then converted Supreme back into it’s heavy haulage steam road locomotive state, complete
with the Road Engines & Kerr signwriting! :exclamation:  ,and was rallied like this for a few years.
Supreme was eventually returned to it’s original state as a showmans steam road locomotive a few years since.
In early 2019 Supreme was sold to the well-known steam and motor vehicle collector and enthusiast,Mike Dreelan,
Aberdeen,Scotland.

I’m very pleased to say that the Fowler Heavy Haulage Steam Road Locomotive,D2121,Wynns,No.3,is actually now
preserved and has been for some time, including being preserved by Wynns themselves at one time! :exclamation:
It’s Newquay-based owner and enthusiasts will be celebrating it’s 100th Anniversary in July 2020,since it was built in
July 1920! If your one of those people who is psychogicaly, for whatever reason, set in their ways time-wise and
think a certain event, or year,or whatever is so many years since, yet fail to take into account the passing years - part of you does, but another part of you doesn’t - it comes as a shock to realise that the event,or object,or whatever is older
than what you thought it was! :exclamation: :open_mouth: :unamused: :astonished:  It’s one of the reasons for the sayings such as ‘Time flies’,‘The march of time’ and ‘Time, tide and trolley wait for no man’ …the BBC - British Broadcasting Corporation will be
one-hundred-years-old in 2022! :exclamation: :open_mouth:  A sobering thought…2022 is not that far off! :exclamation: :open_mouth:
To me 1920 isn’t all that long since (partly because I love music of all ages and am quite familiar with 1920’s music! :exclamation:
),but the realist in me does realise that 1920 is a long time since. Its now eighty years since 1939 and the start of
World War Two - whatever happened to when it was only twenty-five years since,or thirty years since,or forty years since,or whenever since?  :open_mouth:
Anyway, enough of this philosophising, the above Fowler road locomotive will be 100-years-old in 2020,and had it survived
the Garrett Steam Tractor,DW 2119,Wynns,No.2,in the same photograph would now be one-hundred-and-four years
old being built in 1915! :exclamation:  - the same age as Frank Sinatra :exclamation:  - he was born in 1915

NOTE:A Steam Tractor is a scaled-down version of a general purpose traction engine or road locomotive, and was used
for lightweight haulage and sometimes used to assist traction engines and road locomotives in hauling heavy loads,as
in the case of the Wynns’ Garrett  Travelling showmen, besides operating Showmans Steam Road Locomotives, also
operated Showmans Steam Tractors, which pulled lightweight funfair equipment and in certain cases generated
electricity for some of the amusements.

Although I intend to buy at least one Corgi diecast scale model of a Scammell Contractor 6x4 Heavy Haulage Ballast
Diesel Road Locomotive, probably in Pickfords Heavy Haulage livery, the Contractor is a good looking, impressive and
exciting road locomotive and is worthy of the Scammell Lorries marque  It does not, however, have the ultimate
archetypal, beautiful and classic Scammell look: The Constructor,Mountaineer,Super Constructor,Highwayman,
and bonneted Scammel’s of the 1920s,1930s,1940s,1950s,etc have the archetypal, beautiful and classic Scammell look.
Probably my favourite Scammell model is the Constructor,Crew-Cabbed,6x6 Heavy Haulage Ballast Diesel Road
Locomotive as was operated by Pickfords,Sunters,Siddle C.Cook, etc, and so far,I’ve bought eight Corgi diecast
scale models of these Scammell Constructors, including the glamorous and flashy Chipperfields Circus Cannon
