Spardo:
Any idea what date that article is Dean? I have all those pictures and an update of 1988, Ewen Clough, a wiry little bloke, was dead by that time but the wagon he drove was resurrected, restored and moved to a museum in the Alice where I believe it is to this day.
Hello “Spardo” ,the article was in a 1965 magazine and the last bit was also in a 1965 magazine. Looks like it was built in the 1930’s chap.
Yes, I am surprised it was only in service for 11 years or so, also that some 20 odd years after retirement it was still languishing in a scrapyard. I believe it is in the Road Transport Hall of Fame in Alice Springs now, but perhaps Dig would know.

It was still there in 09 when I was last there Spardo and it did a parade through Alice Springs under its own power, I think 11 years was pretty good service for those times with a lack of proper roads and bridges but I understand it did around 80000kms plus a year not a bad effort.

As with so many regrets I have in my travels around the world, flashing through the Alice helter skelter for Victoria without stopping is just one of them.
Of course, it wouldn’t have been there back in '69, nor the museum, I’d have had a better chance of seeing it while I lived in Darwin, but of course, I didn’t even know it existed then.
I can’t find that “friendly two fingered gesture” on that instruction card DIG, or does that only show on the English one…?
You will have to refer that question to Spardo Patrick as he is the only one I know who is experienced in its use.
Dig
Right, out with the old, in with the new…
Docent look like you will be joining the Australian branch getting another black one and because black shows up the dirt more than any other colour is the ladder part of the cleaning kit. Nice though.
I’ve got my coat on.
Dig
Some say… I’m still a nipper in nappies… so the ladder is only there to get in the cab mate, as I can’t reach that first step
About cleaning the wagon, I suggest you speak to a certain Herr Sutherland, who’s into polishing his machines… I’ll keep the inside tidy, that’s it… now, where did I left my coat…

They must like you Patrick ! Nice looking motor, what engine is in it ?
Only because I’m the hardest working lad here mate ! …coat…
It’s a 500, quite the difference with that gutless Merc 440… it’s nice to have a wagon again that pulls like a train!

Looking good Patric,so how do you like it so far?
Mine just hit 400000km still pulls like train but i had have some trouble with it to say the least. But still its a great unit and i go for a Volvo again. What engine dose it have?
And congrats on the 100 page, well done.
Danne
Cheers Danne, but you’ve made reaching a 100 pages possible too with you’re input
It’s great mate, drives like a dream and pulls like a train! It’s not a 750 like yours, but I’m quite happy to have a 500 again (remember the old orange one I had )
And the bunk is great, haven’t slept that good for years!
It does use a lot of ad-blue though, much more than the Merc… Are you still having problems with It? My old man drives one as well, at three years old, the cilinderhead was replaced because one of the valves went belly up…

I have to agree i think 11 years was bloody awesome ! I dont think you would get modern motors lasting 11 years on roadtrain operations.
Heres another old one from Aussi from 1965.
Click on pages twice to read.
Could be wrong but i am sure they made a short film about this company/run as when we were kids i must have seen it about 5 times at school.

I bet that extra power makes a hell of a difference in your line of work chap.

Cracking article once again pal, you surely got some shoe box eh
Another Scania for you Johnny, I prefer the R series than the new generation, mind you I said I preferred the 3 series when the 4 series came out! (NMP)
