HATO Control Room Jobs

limeyphil:
What’s the need for a CRB check?
I thought they were introduced to stop paedophiles working with children?

anyone know the answer?

That dosn’t answer the question.
Why does someone need a CRB check to work in a Highways control room?
It’s not a childrens ward at the local hospital, or a creche. It’s a room full of monitors looking at roads.

It’s a CRB check - because e.g. they don’t want to employ someone with a string of convictions for dishonesty etc in a position where they will be calling out subcontractors etc at significant cost to the public ■■■■■. A conviction for Misconduct in Public Office might also lower your chances of getting the job…

A standard CRB check (which is what they want) is not the same as the enhanced CRB check that is required if you are going to be working with kids or vulnerable adults.

CRB checks are now called DBS checks anyway (but the same applies WRT “enhanced” checks)

Was tempted to apply for a position in the SW area at Wellington JCT 26 as wanted someone preferably with an hgv but i couldn’t afford the wage drop, (mortgage is a killer isn’t it ?) but i think it was more like 22K not as low as 19

when was this advertised?

When the HATOs were first being implemented I thought I’d apply for the job based at Darlington. 20+ years of trucking , tons of experience etc.

However when the application pack turned up it was quite clear that they were more interested in people with political correctness before experience. I didn’t bother applying and regard them as a bit of a waste of space to be honest.

What a surprise, someone who wanted to do the job, couldn’t fill out the application and then chooses to say we’re a waste of space. How original. You do have to be PC with people you know, we can’t grab our balls and wipe the ketchup from our face when someones in need.

The CRB check is because you will be handling personal data such as car regs and people names etc and also due to the Police PNC system that we have access to.

Shame a lot of you guys don’t go for it, you’d realise just what is involved in the job instead of a group of you spouting stuff you know nothing about rather than ask questions. Example, another thread about why have the Police got an Evoque. Trouble is, you have literally no idea how much the emergency services pay for them so rather than ask, you have to get on the argumentative aggressive band wagon.

I looked into becoming a highways officer as it would challenge me in ways I would like. Nope, not a chance in hell of getting a job anywhere local to me. No jobs, not recruiting. Shame as I believe I could do and enjoy the job.

I believe there’s only Control room jobs advertised at the moment. On road could (I use the word with caution) be in for some shake-up, as single crewing looks to be coming in up to a point, then there is talk of other changes which will throw up spare people. so where some of the outstations are short-staffed at the moment, this might not be the case sometime in the future without taking on new staff.

For any HATO job, on road or Control Room, you need to live within 1 hour trvelling time to the place of work.

Anyone who does apply, good luck!

Does this then imply that the HATO service is losing numerous experienced men because of its application policy. Clearly it does as you have run into my reaction before. I get things done and if someones toes get stood on then tough ■■■■■■

Unfortunately Lone Wolf that is not the type of attitude the HA or Civil Service are looking for. The HA being part of the Civil Service is so PC, anyone in private business wouldn’t believe it!
The original applications were first “paper-shifted” by an outside employment agency before the HA ever saw the applications, and the application form was designed to be long-winded and searching, so that those that “couldn’t be bothered to fill it in correctly” were soon sifted out. They then looked for simple things like “In no more than 200 works describe how you did…” They’d count the words, anything more than the 200 and a line was drawn through them and whatever was in those words was ignored, also it was “Describe how YOU” did something. If you wrote about something being done with “WE did this etc” with yourself being part of a team that did something then it would be discounted.
This was purely a paper shift to cut the numbers down to those that followed the instructions etc. Then the content of what had been put on the form was evaluated before passing the application papers on to the HA personnel.

That was in the early days, how it’s going to be done this time, I don’t know, but I do know that it’s all going to be in house, not by any outside agency.

Not been any HATO recruitment here (Chelston, Wellington) for nearly 4 years (and none now). There are 6 of us here with LGV licenses, I am the only one still driving lorries on my days off.
We run a different shift pattern here in the South west (which includes Avonmouth). We work 6 on followed by 4 off but have slightly longer shift hours and have to work 2 extra ‘flexi’ days every 10 week work block. Shifts run thus…2 earlies followed by 2 lates then 2 nights and 4 off, it all adds up to an average 37hr week over 10 weeks.
