I understand that RPL (in Milton Keynes) are taking home around £350 a week !
Working 3 x 15, 2 x 13, running in on a Saturday morning, working every other Saturday for £10 p/hr (if they’re lucky, apparently they ■■■■ their money about !)
£17 per night out.
Works out at around £6 p/hr gross or £4.60 p/hr nett.
SHOCKING !
That’s a career move I won’t be making !

Yea, but they’re still jumping ship. They come to us & a few move on but no one ever goes back to RPL.
Think I’d rather sweep the streets than work those hours (even though a lot of POA must be used) & that ■■■■ Poor Pay.

That would be for basic dayshift work would it not
The Monty work ends up@ about £330take home for the contracted 55hrs(complete crap yes) but they rarely do the max 55hrs now do they
Their nightshift is better@ about £380 take home for mostly 8hrs/night as the loads are planned as they’re wild careful you don’t go over the 10hr nightshift WTD rule.
Go tramping for them and its £650home long week/£500home short week and 100% legal.
I fail to understand the logic of experienced drivers when there are NI quarry firms DESPERATE for 8wheeler tipper drivers@ £8.50hr (some BIG new contracts coming onstream particularly 66acre to fill in@ Dargan Rd Docks to expand port
) and 3trips to mainland for MorganMc will net you £700take home.
(if you live close to Silverwood Coldstore Lurgan you’ll get home on your 11hr daily rest on the Tue/Thur so not a full week away for the £700)
Yet they continue to moan in Tesco drivers waiting room/canteen that they are on £6.50hr
The two agencies in Tesco NI will give you as many hrs as you can legally take ATM on days for £9.50hr
When I was in Driverhire office last Thur morn registering with them the “lovely” wee girl was standing over me while I filled in the forms saying “Can you do this
Can you do that
its all full time ongoing work”.
Their phone was ringing off the hook and when answered it was usually “Sorry we can’t get the drivers”
Yes,
I’m getting tortured by phonecalls/txt from them now.
Time get get off your arses lads its:
SUPPLY AND DEMAND
If this happens January-February next year - THEN you can start celebrating.
I’ve been told there are “fewer drivers on the books now” - but even if rates don’t go up, one would expect to get a bit more of the cream work rather than far away crap. Still, the job is what you make it. “Far away” is still worth bothering with when it involves enough hours booked, and the job itself once you’re there is fairly good.
Darb:
A couple of months ago when I made the decision I was leaving my current employer I applied for 4 driving positions, 3 said thanks but no thanks, one invited me for a driving assessment and that’s where I now work. In the last couple of weeks I’ve been contacted by the other 3 asking if I would like to go in for a driving assessment
I got knocked back by 4 places I applied to a year ago. After turning me down, they asked me if “we should keep you on file for further vacancies that might arise in the future”. I declined, saying I’d re-apply if I was interested in the new pumped-up deal at the time.
Been contacted by 2 of them in the last month. I’ve told them I’m not interested in the same deal being offered last year, seeing as I now have a DCPC and suspect I got turned down in the first place 'cos they were too skinflint to put me through it! I also rebuked them for “keeping me on file” when I expressly said “DON’T do that.” So much for data protection. Probably burned some bridges there now, but looking back, I don’t think I’m missing out on much.
I can’t say I’m keen on doing any further “driving assessments” that last over an hour. Inductions tagged onto a fully-paid shift? - Yes. 3+ hour efforts at distance that don’t even guarantee any work if you pass the damned thing - NO.
Thing is the signs were there this year, I was out full time up until xmas and was looking forward to the jan-feb break which never happened, I was kept busy until April before it started to ease off a bit, then May I went into my usual summer call me if you’re REALLY stuck.
From what I’ve seen and heard the driver supply started drying up around 2 months ago and we haven’t got anywhere near September when all the old boys will finally pull the plug, I reckon the ones that have gone so far are the ones going to jobs in other industries.

The big girl ( older) is the mummy, the young girl sitting across from her is the daughter and the ■■■■ one with her back to the door is the niece, would do time for her
I found there work to be a day here, a day there, covering sick leave or holidays. that’s not to say you won’t get steady work. I use them in between my Euro work. If they ask you to work though…■■■■ can’t remember the word not PAYE but the other method…it will cost you £24 a week to get your wages but they say they give you a £1 extra to cover it
. Their hourly rates seem to be less than other agencys.
Will/have you done UK work?
All I hear from our t.o bods is we must keep the agency drivers SWEET,I assume from that they mean they daren’t upset them,as they then wouldn’t come back and they’d then have no- one too drive the trucks.

Told them to “stuff Driverhire umbrella as its a con and HMRC are going to come looking for you”
I am considering UK work but don’t want to be away all week so its the “boat chaser” companies who now run legit that I’m looking at.
With them it seems to be fairly relaxed work week wise as you can just do the 2runs each week (3rd one every now and again or a single dayshift to boost the take home wage ) which would suit me more for family life.
cheekymonkey:
I’m in the Teesside/Durham/N Yorkshire area so not known as a well paid part of the country for HGVdrivers, but I’m getting txts from my usual agency offering a £100 reward for the introduction of a new driver and when I try and cancel a shift I’m told. . “we have no one else to do it”…before he breaks down and pleads with me to turn in.
Then another agency rings out of the blue and says their rates have gone up a £ an hr and there’s time n a half after 8Hrs…Please join us! !!!
Have we turned the corner?
What are you other fellas experiencing?
Juhuu
I can’t say if this is the case north of the border in Scotland I’ve sent away at least 20 cv with covering letters to All the major distribution company’s not one reply
I do hope it is the case that there is a driver shortage not convinced though would be interested to hear from fellow Scottish drivers if they have a different opinion
