Hiya Jon…i,ve gone into the fairground side of transport. yes plenty of freemans one been aj.
the dark red could also be fairground colour.
John
Many thanks! Yea that could be a possibility! Its certinly been played with a bit at some point - and that would ring true with the showmen. The bottom dark red is the old BOC colour - but on top of that it seems slightly lighter red (although this could possibly be the later BOC colour as i think they changed in the late 60’s) . There is also some traces of green around the Freeman sign and then on top of that is the white.
I might try and get hold of the bloke i bought it from and see if he has any details of the guy who had it before im etc. Its worth a try!

Thats a thought, maybe the holes in the chassis were for mounting a generator ?
Just had a look on a regarchive site, doesn`t give much info but it has this…
This registration was first registered during the period January 1965 to December 1965.
The registration was first registered in London.

I wonder if BOC bought batches of lorries, registerted them in London and then sent them off around the country?
I would think that’s quite probable, it would make sense to keep records of company vehicles in a head office, so all admin would be taken care of there.
According to wiki, BOC had their head office in Windlesham, about 25 miles from London. It does mention that the premises were built in 1980 but there`s a fair chance that any old premises would be somewhere in that region.
As BOC is now part of the Linde group, is it worth contacting them as they seem to have an archive section about historical industrial trucks. Probably a bit optimistic but maybe they stashed away the earlier BOC records when they took over ? http://resources.linde.com/International/Web/Linde/like35lindecom.nsf/docbyalias/nav_ch_contact_01
Ill give that a go, but im not too hopeful. My dad worked for BOC for some 20 odd years and used some of his contacts to try and get some info and all we got was “sorry, our records dont go back that far”. It probably didnt help that the woman we spoke too didnt seem to care. Will give that a go though!

during my 10 years at BOC, their group offices were always around the Guildford area although I am sure that they have historically had a manufacturing presence in the east end (poss Hackney)
Been a long time since ive been on this thread but have stumbled across a little more information today. A bloke has messaged me asking if this is the one that stood in a yard in Loughborough for many years. I did not know but I did buy it from Nottingham and I found the faint traces of a British Car Auctions sign in the windscreen when I bought it. Looking through google it seems there is a big British Car Auctions spot in Measham which is only 15 miles from Loughborough and only 25 miles from Nottingham. When you look at the W. Freeman and Sons Dunton Warf this is also only 18 miles from Measham.
I wonder if the chap I spoke with at Freemans was mistaken? Its all very coincidental!

I have just been told that when the unit was for sale (still not sure if it mine or not) the guy thinks it was owned by a showman. Question is I guess is the AJ freeman from the Loughborough area?
