I’m just Trade Plating cars at the moment. Some nice cars, some are right old bangers lol. I am self employed so get a decent rate for it and can pick and choose the jobs so they link up. Not too much interim travel which is a killer on the funds.
I see. I have seen this type of work advertised a lot recently. How does it work?
Mainly Dealer Transfers of stock vehicles.
I have a fuel card and a set of Plates (which replace road fund licence).
I am part of a delivery network and sign up to job boards where jobs are put out to tender and I can choose whether to take the job.
I also advertise my services on various media.
A lot of work goes on behind the scenes.
You also have to have a keen eye for detail as all damage, no matter how minor, must be accounted for.
Oh right. So would you reccommend it then? A good mate of mine has a company who were looking for people to do it near him in the west midlands. He thought about going for it, but as yet hasn’t done so. Is he best going to them or could he just do it himself, if so, how?
You’ll be allright with Conway Bailey. the lull is probably the lull between seasons…spuds should be starting soon. I did 6 months there but it didn’t suit me to well (trouble from “er indoors”)
Keep an eye out for Matt F, he’s on here as well and does (did) part time for Bailey

The logistics of matching up jobs CAN be a headache. But if he is happy to do that then go for the S/E option. Apply for Motor Trade insurance for Delivery Agents. Take the policy to the local DVLA office and fill in a form for Trade Licences. Sign up to Vehicle Deliveries boards and the work will come.
There are people that do it with third party on their personal insurance but its just a matter of time before they are caught. And reputable dealers like to see a Commercial Insurance Policy.
If that seems like a major headache, they should go down the employed route. But they should be prepared to be run ragged for silly money and lots of interim travel.

Hi Semtex!
Yeah, so far it has been good. I have now been there for just over a year now. It’s strange how there hasn’t been a similar lull in the work during my time there until now though. Maybe they have aquired a few more drivers recently. Who knows. I must admit I am not 100% happy with it. As you know, it’s very easy work but the wage…

Right. So, what can the cost of that insurance be?

How come you moved so far away anyway?
I needed a fresh start after the marriage went pear shaped, I had a job lined up up here that fell through, now I’m running ferry trailers into Immingham on nights for decent money.

Oh, I see. Well nice one mate! Any jobs going there?
Ah, so it is possible to spread most of it then. Good.
So how do the payments work out? And does it work out to be good money?
Yes. Most of it can be spread.
Money is good if you get on with some decent dealers / garages.
Transporting eBay sales can be hit and miss. I’m on first name terms with a few AA patrols
If you can get a reliable car and trailer combination or a 3.5t beavertail (taking care not to overload it) it often works out better for the eBay wrecks

Err…right. Am still confused as to how you go about it all tbh, but I will let ‘my mate’ know all the same.
I saw a Waldrons W&D a few weeks back and wondered if it was you - obviously not. Good to hear you are still earning a crust - I would never have thought you would have found work in Cornwall and not in the Midlands, though.
Hope to hear a bit more form you now you are back mate.

Hi Alan!
Thanks mate. A Walrdons W&D?? I didn’t know they had any tbh. Not that I noticed during my time there anyway.
Yeah, you would think the Midlands would be a better place for jobs than Cornwall, but I didn’t just move here to ‘try my luck’ ya know. I know I’m daft, but not that daft! After getting made redundant from Waldrons (last in, first out!) I came down here to stay at my sisters house in Penzance and popped in to a company in Redruth where her boyfriends mate worked, as he told her they were looking for drivers at the time. It was true, and as well as enjoying a nice week in Cornwall for free, I ended up getting offered a job. However…I feel as though I was conned tbh.
I was put on an hourly rate (which was, and still is totally KRAP!) and was subject to the usual trial basis. So, I presumed I would be offered a full time contract a few weeks later and become a proper full time employee on a salary, like 95% of all my colleagues. But after a few weeks I was quite taken aback by the chap who deals with driver training & recruitment, as he presented me with a contract to sign but said that it was a “contract to say you haven’t got a contract!” Basically, it’s one of these ‘zero hour’ contracts which means that when it goes quiet, they don’t have to pay you anything!
To start with, that was fine for me as it also meant that if I wanted any time off to pop back up to Stratford and spend time with my Mom, I could do so without any arguing about booking days off etc. It’s been great for the past 12 months as they have always had plenty of work for me (too much at times tbh) but it’s gone real quiet lately. I haven’t worked a day in the last two weeks! So, I once again find myself looking around for more work.
How’s thing’s your way then Al. You been busy or what?
