When i was running a truck to Moscow and back in the late eighties we never had problems like that as China and Ebay hadnt been invented .

It absolutely is, thatâs my promotional video.
Truck sorted, had a semi-seized alternator tensioner and that shredded the alternator drive belt so Renault fitted a new tensioner and belt set under warranty. Otherwise I would have been looking at a ÂŁ1,000 repair bill. One of the reasons I have the truck maintained by a main dealer is that there isnât any quibble if I get future problems, had an independent fitter replaced the tensioners when I had them done in July, Iâm sure Renault would just say that he hadnât done the job properly.

I think definitely in this case youâre right and if the work had been done at an independent you would have had another bill but I do think on aggregate main dealers donât offer value for money for the average small operator.
Nowt to do with me my old mucker.

It really is Swings and Roundabouts. There is a Renault dealer in my Operating Centre and so I can leave the truck with them at the weekend for inspections etc, and sod off home knowing the work will be done at their leisure when I come back in on Monday.
Having work done anywhere else would involve either downtime during the week or me spending a significant part of my weekend hanging around while the work was done, would cost me diesel getting there and back and would eat into my statutory rest period.
I get a ÂŁ20 per hour discount on the standard Renault dealership labour rate so itâs not that expensive, I know the work will always be done to a high standard and when I sell the truck I will be able to sell it with a full main dealer service history which will maintain its value (The previous owner had it serviced at Thompson Commercials, also a Renault main dealer).
There is also inevitably a problem when an independent fitter carries out work using manufacturerâs parts and the work needs to go back under warranty for whatever reason, because both will try to push the blame on each other for the fault, yesterdayâs breakdown would have cost me ÂŁ1,000 if the original work hadnât been carried out by Renault, as it was it cost me nothing.
But, as with everything else, there is no âOne size fits allâ answer about how to run a truck, Iâm doing what best seems to suit my own circumstances.
You might have mentioned it before and I havenât seen it but I didnât realise there was a Renault dealer on your doorstep.
That obviously makes sense the time-saving factor is going to be worth a hell of a lot as you say.
I donât think I have mentioned it before, but my operating centre is East Kent International Freight Terminal, I can see K.T.S Renault Trucks out of my windscreen when Iâm parked up at the weekend. Theyâve got a spare set of keys so if I get back late this Friday for example (six-weekly inspection is due), Iâll just park the unit outside the workshop and itâll be ready to drive away late Sunday or early Monday when I get back.
I do whatever work I can myself though, I wouldnât pay them to change a bulb etc.
