0I thought RK Crisp’s Guys with the tropical roofs had ■■■■■■■ NTC 335s in (just as Pickford’s did). Somewhere on the TNUK forum this claim is made. Can anyone confirm or deny? Robert
I always believed they had 250 ■■■■■■■ and were part of a cancelled export order. The 335’s and 290’s usually had vertical exhaust stacks as the turbo lived out on the cat walk with no room in the engine bay for it.
If you lost the turbo heatshield you normally ended up with melted susies when turning tight !
p.s looking again that Crisp motor has an up right exhaust but I am pretty sure they were all 250’s.
Hiya…ive seen a quote in the observer book of commercials a Guy big J 8 legger with a 335 ■■■■■■■ engine
and a Smiths of Maddiston 6 wheel tractor unit with a 270 ■■■■■■■ engine.i was abit of a GUY nut i learned
to drive in a big J…the company also had a short door Invincible with a Gardner 150.
John
Cheers Trev and John! Robert

Hiya,
Was this old girl based at Trafford Park at one time or possibly one like it, it does
look familiar it did it’s main work on heavy plant if I’m not mistaken.
thanks harry, long retired.
Nice line-up of Big Js ready for the journey to Milnthorpe in order to have the rattly Rolls engines swopped for the far superior Gardner 8s. Yet another pile of readies for Dennis’ retirement fund.

I remember driving a Guy charabanc with a Red Indian’s head on the radiator cap and the motto beneath “Feathers in our Cap”.

A genuine one is worth around £150 to £250 today depending on it’s condition.
We can’t let this thread sink off page 1,this is a great shot of three of the Big J’s we ran at Bewick Transport probably a 75/76 shot in our old depot down in Milnthorpe, the Guys were never going to be driver favourites and certainly by that time never going to be “flag ships” of the fleet but they were never-the-less reliable economical workhorses, great motors !! I believe the Guy order book was full at the time Leyland closed the Big J line down, what a load of “wallies” they truly were at BL. Cheers Bewick.
